Tajon Buchanan is a double trophy winner after just four months and 46 minutes played in Italy.

With Buchanan an unused substitute, Inter beat their city rivals AC Milan 2-1 on Monday at the San Siro stadium that the two teams share to secure their 20th Serie A title and a second trophy at the club for the Canadian.

Former Rossoneri defender Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram scored either side of half-time for the Nerazzurri, who were technically the away team for the game at their own home. Calgary’s own Fikayo Tomori netted a late consolation for Milan but it wasn’t enough to deny Inter, who have won the title with five games to spare and now move clear of their 19-times-champion rivals.

The win also means Inter’s kits will have a second star above the badge from next season, with Serie A rules allowing teams to wear one star per 10 league titles won.

Buchanan didn’t make it off the bench but took part in the wild celebrations after each goal and at full-time.

The Canadian already had silverware on his mantelpiece, having won the Supercoppa Italia back in January, just weeks after his €7 million ($10.3 million) move to Inter and before he had even played a single minute of action for the storied Italian giants. He has also previously won the MLS Supporters Shield in 2021 with the New England Revolution and the 2022 Belgian Pro League title with Club Brugge.

Since winning the Supercoppa, he has become the first CanMNT player ever to play in Serie A, making his debut in mid-February as a 77th-minute substitute against Salernitana. In total, he has made five appearances as a substitute for the historic club, although those have amounted to just 46 minutes of action plus stoppage time in total.

Now that Inter have secured the title and have nothing else to play for, having been knocked out of the Coppa Italia in December and the UEFA Champions League in March, could we see him get more game time?

The talk is that Dutch right wing-back Denzel Dumfries may well leave this summer, and that would mean Buchanan and Italian veteran Matteo Darmian would battle for the spot in the starting XI, unless Inter sign yet another player in that position to keep up the triple rotation.

Buchanan has been bottom of the pile on the right flank so far in the first months of his career in Italy, but a pressure-free final stretch of the season would seem the perfect opportunity for Simone Inzaghi to hand him more chances.

That cause will be helped by the fact that Dumfries, along with Milan’s Theo Hernandez, was shown a straight red card in stoppage time after a huge brawl broke out in the closing minutes. That opens up the right wing-back spot for the coming games and Buchanan will be desperate to grab any chance he gets with both hands.

Here’s hoping he gets more Serie A experience before heading off to face Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Co. with CanMNT at this summer’s Copa América.
