If you are in Taipei and you have the time to spare to do a quick hike (1.5-2 hrs), going up to the peak of Elephant Mountain is highly recommended. It’s a welcome break from the shopping and eating that comes with vacating. You get to burn off some of the accumulated calories while seeing a different view of the city!

The weather was pretty bad, so we just popped in to the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall our our way from Taipei 101 to Longshan Temple.
It was a very big area, much bigger than I expected!

some of the best Chinese artifacts, art and history to be seen, well worth a visit. An easy half day venture. We rode the buses to get there which was fun navigating.

A great place to visit to get some photos of Taipei 101 building even if you don't go up. We decided against it as, by local prices, it's expensive at NT$600 per person (compared to for example NT$100 for the zoo).

The food court is great! Lots of different foods to see and try. Most places have an English translated menu too.

The shopping area is full of very expensive brands so interesting to see.

It must get really busy here - but it was lovely and quiet when we went. Get the metro to Taipei zoo and walk about 5-10 mins to the gondola station.

There are tickets machines outside and inside the building. It costs NT$120 per adult for a 1 way journey (approx £3). Like everything in Taiwan it's very clean and ordered.

There are clear bottom cable cars and normal ones - there are queue lines are marked for either. We got straight into a cable cat and had it to ourselves. It's a 30 journey each way. The cable car is really quiet and smooth.

There's not much to see at the top as it's not at the top of the mountain but it's still worth going up for the views.

You can get the bus back down- much cheaper at NT$15 per person but we went down by cable car as there was quite a long wait - each bus stop has time tables in English.

If you are planning on going to the zoo afterwards, get off at the zoo south station (not the last terminal station) as you can buy a zoo ticket and then walk down the hill rather than up again!

    It's great!

It's an absolutely beautiful building and so worth a visit.

Come on MRT blue line and exit to Longshan - you won't miss the temple!

It's stunning to see - lots of people attending to pray and visitors taking photos. Offerings are being made, along with a big queue of people buying offerings.

    It's so worth a trip.

What a brilliant zoo! Take the brown line metro to the zoo - it's really close to the metro station.

It only costs NT$100 per adult (approx £2.50) which is incredible! You can go into the visitor centre and get English maps but all the zoo signs are in dual languages.

You can easily while away a whole day here. The panda house is closed to entry on the first Monday of the month - worth knowing if that is what you really want to see.

There are lots of animals we wouldn't see in UK zoos- koala, giant pandas, pangolin , capybara, anteaters... as well as the usual African animals including hippos.

The pangolin dome is brilliant as is the bird world dome.

If you decide to do the cable car first, get off at the zoo station south stop as you can buy a ticket and then walk down the hill to see everything rather than go to the bottom of the hill (to the main station stop) and wall back up again!

Go in for a coffee when you leave the pangolin dome - it's amazing!!

A really great zoo and well worth a visit

Yangmingshan is not just one mountain but rather a collection of mountains that spreads over both Taipei and New Taipei - we thoroughly loved hiking and exploring the different scenic routes here. Visited in November 2019 and saw all the autumn foliage with the cows at Qing Tian Gang and the romantic silver grass opposite sulphury fumaroles at Xiao You Keng.

    CHERRY BLOSSOMS everywhere and accessibility:
This time we visited in February, and were delighted by the newly blooming Cherry Blossoms and Azaleas at their most famous centerpiece - Taiwan's Flower Clock Garden beside the really beautiful Cherry Woodland and Stream Scenic Area, and the lesser-known Azalea-Camelia Garden (杜鹃山茶花园). The latter was right beside a giant car park flanked by cherry blossom trees that was easily accessible by private cars (and therefore easily accessible for those who had limited mobility) and public transport (plenty of bus information online). Kudos to the park management for making the beautiful Yangmingshan so accessible for the public.

    LOOKOUT PAVILION at Azalea-Camelia Garden:
The Azalea-Camelia Garden was lesser known and less crowded, but we loved that there were plenty of different-coloured Azaleas, Camelia bushes alongside the willowy Taiwanese Acacia trees (台灣相思樹). We loved even more that there was a trial that led to a lookout tower/ viewing pavilion that overlooks the Qixing (Seven Stars) Mountain, and as you turn 360 degrees, you can also see the Datun Mountain, Shamao Mountain (紗帽山) peak which was named literally because it looked like a bowled-shape gauze hat... all the views of the surrounding peaks only available from this somewhat secretive/lesser known lookout pavilion.

MOM-AND-POP stores run by the locals:
Something interesting was that despite being a relatively established attraction, there were still some very old, locally run Mom-and-Pop stores selling freshly cooked meals and snacks using locally-sourced mountain-grown vegetables cooked over traditional coal stoves - worth checking them out.

Taipei 101 Observatory was a great program.
The observatory offered plenty of opportunities for photos. There were Insta photo set-up all around the floor.
You could buy a ticket to 89th floor and walk up 2 flights to 91st for open-air views, but upon our visit it was closed due to the bad weather.

This place is huge with a number of different buildings and various altars. All of the structures have detailed, artistic woodwork and there is a lot of variety. The temple is also very active as a lot of people were praying and burning incense when we were there.

We saw this and the nearby Confucius temple that is less than a block away. The two temples are quite different and we were glad that we went to both.
