Been trying to purchase a Chris Andrews CD for quite a while. Swinging Sixties Hit Man is a double CD, and was a bonus as I had been trying to buy a 20 song Greatest Hits CD. Apart from his few hits, I had not heard anything else before. Wow!!, was I surprised. Except for the foriegn language tracks everything else is between excellent and very good. Too many songs to individualise so if you want a Chris Andrew CD for the collection, this is the one. Maybe a bit pricey, but with a very good booklet is worth the money. The only fault is that the whole package is from Germany (where he had most of his success) and therefore is light on chart facts and where the album tracks came from. But this is nit-picking and if you just enjoy this type of music, then this is for you. A 5 star effort.

Chris was a brilliant performer in his own right although it seems that he was more interested in writing songs than performing them. Nevertheless, his breakthrough as a songwriter came about as a result of his live performances in London. Adam Faith, one of the first to discover Chris' talents, was also the man who discovered Sandie Shaw. Adam was the first singer to have a hit with one of Chris' songs, taking the appropriately titled First time into the UK top five. Although Sandie's two most famous hits (Always something there to remind me, Puppet on a string) were written by others, Chris wrote most of Sandie's big hits including Girl don't come, Long live love and Message understood. Chris wrote plenty of songs for Sandie to choose from. Yesterday man was among those that Sandie turned down the chance to record.
Eventually Andrew Oldham (the manager of the Rolling Stones) expressed a desire to record Chris Andrews singing his own material. Yesterday man was the song chosen to launch Chris as a solo artist. Released as a single with Too bad you don't want me (also included here) on the B-side, it sold half a million copies in the UK (where it made the top three) and one and half million in Germany (where it made number one). Chris has always been more popular in Germany (where this compilation was released) than Britain (where it's hard to find his music except for the occasional cheap budget release or the occasional appearance of Yesterday man on a sixties various artists compilation).
Yesterday man remains the song that Chris is best remembered for (at least in Britain) as a solo performer although he made the UK top twenty with To whom it concerns (his second German number one, this song has become the theme for a long-running TV chat show in Ireland) and three minor UK hits, all included here. Pretty Belinda, released in 1969, was not a UK hit but it has proved to be enormously popular in several European countries including Germany, Italy and Finland, though it was usually a hit for other artists. Chris is happy with that, of course, being a writer first and a performer second.
Chris had other hits in Germany and elsewhere in Europe although his comments in the extensive liner notes do not always make clear if he was the singer who had the hit. If Chris wrote the song, he regards it as his hit.
This is a magnificent compilation of music by a singer who could have been a big star if he'd really wanted to. Chris preferred writing songs for others and it seems that he is happy with how things worked out. Although this compilation is now out of print, others are available, particularly in Germany, including a different double CD. If you enjoy sixties pop music, especially Sandie Shaw's music, you are likely to enjoy listening to Chris Andrews, whether via this or some or compilation.
