This fine twenty-three song collection has me believing it's about time Ms. Thomas enjoyed a revival. The relative lack of monster hits (relative to contemporary soul queens Aretha and Etta) is more than compensated by Irma's vocal prowess, which invigorates even the lesser numbers. And the range of feelings on display is very nice too. Thomas can turn on the 'tude ("Hittin' on Nothing") just as easily as she can show us her vulnerable side ("Wish Someone Would Care" and the especially gorgeous "Ruler of My Heart"). "It's A Man's Woman's World (Pt. 1)" showcases a cynical side, trying to establish a dialogue with the classic James Brown track. Then there are a few obvious dance cuts, of which "Break-A-Way" is the clear-cut winner: bell chimes, hand-claps, the kitchen sink. Strangely, "Time is on My Side," the one song I knew coming in, leaves me underwhelmed. Let that be a lesson to me: never listen to more famous versions before hearing the originals. Yeah, alright.
