Product Description

Import-only two CD compilation from the British Folk/Rock legend highlighting his critically successful years with Island Records. Along with Nick Drake, John Martyn was one of the most compelling British singer/songwriters to emerge during the 1970s. Martyn specialized in an acoustic, bluesy Folk sound, but he was also a restless experimentalist, running his guitar through all manner of effects processors and incorporating elements of Jazz, Pop, and ambient music. This double disc set is a survey of Martyn's work for Island Records, ranging from 1971's folky Bless the Weather through 1980's pop-oriented Grace And Danger. In between, listeners are treated to a comprehensive sampling of the artist's talents, from his sonically expansive guitar-scapes to his poetic, meticuloussense of songcraft. The music from Martyn's early-to-mid '70s period stands up the best, but the later work selected here is strong too. This is an excellent introduction back to front.

His whisky-grained vocals and alternately sweet, stinging acoustic guitar have made Scottish troubador John Martyn a seductive but sadly overlooked original among British folk performers since his emergence in the late '60s. That oversight is answered by this intelligent two-CD anthology of Martyn's rich catalog of albums for Island Records, which document his triple threat as a distinctive guitarist, soulful singer, and compelling writer and interpreter. Martyn's moody legacy includes winsome ("May You Never," covered by Eric Clapton) and harrowing ("Solid Air," his plea to friend Nick Drake) examples of abundant craft, notable for his rich vocals and spare, elegant arrangements featuring Richard Thompson, Danny Thompson, Phil Collins, and other better-known English musicians who savored Martyn's musical gifts.--Sam Sutherland

Excellent Overview With Most Key Points. I have been a John Martyn fan since 1974 when a DJ friend (where are you Frank Cody?) turned me on to Solid Air along with some corned beef hash minus the corned beef. I already owned many of the tracks on disk 1 so bought this to get the best of the work he did after Sunday's Child.not sure why I didn't bother with One World and Grace and Danger as they are also two very good releases.

The package is very nice, a standard slimline two CD jewel case in a cardboard sleeve and a very nice booklet with good essay and lots of great pix.

But of course it is the music that matters and I can tell you there is not one single filler tune found here, it's all great stuff!

I found a cassette of John Martyn's left in a hire car years ago and listened to it while I had the car before returning both. I'd never heard of him before and liked the style, sound and content. It's Leonard Cohen in Irish if you will, a just the thing when one is in a reflective mood. I always intended to buy some of his music and when I saw this anthology on offer I bought it. It's worth it for the track "May you never" alone, the rest are a bonus. It does make one wonder how much other great stuff is out there waiting to be discovered and hidden by all the commercial music with which we are repetitively bombarded every day and from every direction. So my next buy will be Blossom Dearie, wonderful stuff!

This is the most wonderful collection of Martyn's music since " No Little Boy ." It represents my favorite period of his work and, to me, his most creative. I had most of this music on vinyl when it first came out, but ditched all my records at a yard sale in favor of CDs many years ago and never looked back. So, it's a real treat to have so much of Martyn's 1070s output. This is a terrific introduction to the artistry of the late, great John Martyn!

I like his old stuff better. The old stuff on this anthology i already had, and his new stuff is a bit weird and not soothing at all like his earlier stuff.

I've been looking for a copy of this album for years. It has my favorite version of May You Never and many more. John Martyn is in the league with Richard Thompson, Nick Drake and the like.

I got turned on to "Bless the Weather" by John Martyn several years ago and totally adored that album. "Solid Air" was supposed to be even better, so I got that one, but wasn't as blown away by it as I had been with "Bless the Weather." Still though, it makes for a very good listen. Having enjoyed those two CDs, I decide to further immerse myself in the John Martyn experience and buy this double disc compilation. Good value for the money with a generous amount of music on both discs. One review described this music as "Jazz, Pop, and ambient" and that's fairly close to the mark. There's only the slightest snippets of folk weaved in there too, but don't go thinking like this guy is another Nick Drake. Not at all. Some of the music on the second disc, the stuff that veers into the so-called ambient category, reminds me a bit of Durutti Column. In other words, very interesting. John Martyn was seemingly not content to confine his compositions to one style, so perhaps that eclectic nature did not help his album sales. But it does make one appreciate his music all the more. Some simply outstanding music to be found on this collection. I can't say that I love all of it, but most of it is certainly very, very good. I don't know enough about Martyn's other albums to declare this to the definitive collection, but it seems to me that it covers all the bases and gives the listener a more than adequate overview of his career.

Heard these songs 30 years ago. Most are timeless. Do NOT listen to these too often, and they will last you The Rest Of Your Life. I guarantee.

This 2-disc set from Island contains all of the essential tracks from his early, folkier days (Solid Air, May You Never, Spencer the Rover) and also has quite a few deeper cuts, from his "echoplex jazz" years (Dealer, Johnny Too Bad). There is material that I had not heard, and I consider myself a big John Martyn fan. All in all, a great introduction to the many musical facets of the late, great John Martyn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection that's not a "Big Muff"!

A very close approximation to the best. Not quite,of course, but nearly a bull's eye.Thankfully missing out the very early albums, which, upon rehearing,I detest,we start with the period I remember so very well.45 years or so ago,I heard Glistening Glyndbourne on the John Peel Show, and bought the album immediately.I've been a fan ever since. Why buy this, when I have the canon anyway?Merely for convenience,a great selection in one place. The only downside of the complete Island box is the early material, and sidestepping what I now hear with cringeing embarrassment, this would serve both the novice and the veteran as either an intro,or as a onestop pick of some---not,by any means all--of the best of Johnny.
So not "Johnny too Bad"--Johnny very good!

I'm not mad on all tracks but he had over 40 years of recording.
Id say two thirds of these are very good and the rest are interesting .

Bit of a letdown as I was hoping I'd bought his resung masterpieces. These seem a bit tepid but I just can't recall the title of the copy I had previously to capture his wonderful raddled sounds of the later years.
