Elmore Leonard wrote forty-five novels and nearly as many western and crime short stories across his highly successful career that spanned more than six decades. Some of his bestsellers include Road Dogs, Up in Honey’s Room, The Hot Kid, Mr. Paradise, Tishomingo Blues, and the critically acclaimed collection of short stories Fire in the Hole. Many of his books have been made into movies, including Get Shorty, Out of Sight, and Rum Punch, which became Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown. Justified, the hit series from FX, is based on Leonard’s character Raylan Givens, who appears in Riding the Rap, Pronto, Raylan and the short story “Fire in the Hole”. He was a recipient of the National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the Lifetime Achievement Award from PEN USA, and the Grand Master Award of the Mystery Writers of America. He was known to many as the ‘Dickens of Detroit’ and was a long-time resident of the Detroit area.

Leonard is an American master and this book is one of the jewels of his crown. Few have written with such clarity, eschewing the sideshows and set pieces that lesser writers confuse with the essential virtues of storytelling. I think the scene in the parking lot between Stick and two thieves is a subtle, perfectly orchestrated episode that lingered with me long afterward. The characters are sketched, the reader is given the important details, but they aren't belabored.

Highly recommended for fans of crime/mystery fiction and literary fiction alike. At his best, Leonard rises above all the labels and crafts something unique, full of color and, most important, -true-.

The only fair way to rate Elmore’s work is to compare his novels with one another, because no one else’s fiction is comparable to his. By that measure, “Swag” gets 4 stars, while his best novels (like “Get Shorty”) get 5 stars.

I am a huge Elmore Leonard fan. I love his character development and how is ties his stories to a time in our history. SWAG is wonderful. Two characters trying to make a fast $ get lost and end up worse off than when the started...I think. You will love how Earnest Stickley Jr. and Frank Ryan - the two main characters - meet and become best pals as they try to make fast cash. They do, for a while.

This is my first Elmore Leonard novel. He's known for his dialogue writing, but I didn't find the dialogue to be all to engaging. Won't win any awards for prose. Definitely a book written in the 70s, misogynistic and racist although some of that was necessary to tell the story. The ending was a bit better than I thought it would be based on the rest of the book. a bit underwhelmed and disappointed. Not sure if I'll try another one of his novels.

A turning point in Elmore Leonard's work

Swag was a turning point in Elmore Leonard's writing. The plot was a bit more complicated than his past books. There were more characters. The language and violence was a bit rougher. The book had a more complex middle than any of his works with a suitable number of twists and turns.

The story follows two men that form an armed robbery duo. They rob a number of businesses without ever hurting anyone. When they become mixed up in a big score, they discover that they are being conned by the others they brought in to help them.

What this novel has in common with other Leonard novels is that we don't get to find out what happens to the characters at the end. The story ends before their fate with the law is determined. Leonard does have a crossover character from a previous work, Leon Woody. Strangely enough, Woody was a companion to Jack Ryan in an earlier book and Frank Ryan in this book. Leonard even points out the earlier Ryan character and states that they are not related. This is an interesting piece of information considering that his next novel revives the Jack Ryan character.

Overall, this was a good read.

This is a fun book, especially if you are from or familiar with southeast Michigan (in which case you may appreciate the details in the setting). Violent but funny, with an enjoyable aimlessness and spontaneity which feels more true to life than most books. Swag is now my favorite Elmore Leonard book.

Frank, a used-car salesman, decides Earnest; who likes to be called Stick; might be useful to know, so rather than ID-ing him in court, helps get an auto-theft case thrown out.
Frank and Earnest. A meeting ensues. Agreement that they can make a comfortable living by sticking to Frank's ten rules; and they do just that.
They stick-up bottle-shops, liquor stores, convenience stores, etc, small stuff with low risk that gives them the few thou's they need to live comfortably in a decent apartment block. And the fact that half a dozen of the local denizens happen to be young women who like to decorate the pool only helps pass the time..
Then Frank hears of a major department store robbery going down, something worth twenty times the small, penny-anti stuff they've been dealing with and, against Stick's better judgement, they make plans with a wily night club owner, Sportree.
With plans too loosely made and the odd double-cross, not to mention shooting some bad characters, it looks like Frank and Stick might get away with it.
All they need is the help of Stick's new girl friend...

it's low key, so natural flow, it's a writers performance at absolute world class level, sometimes I need to pause in awe of the master work of dialogue, how can the writer convey so vivid tableaus so easily? the dialogue is fantastic, the turn of events oddly natural, so weird and coincidental as it can be in real life. It's not about a super agent saving the world, it's not about warfare, high tech, thank you for that!

This is one of Elmore Leonard's early novels and one of his best! It has that cool 70's vibe and great atmosphere to spare. Mr. Leonard's best novels are character driven thrillers and "Swag" is a great example. The two main protagonists complement each other perfectly. One of them is cool, taciturn and introverted, the other one is more talkative, extroverted and likes to take risks. Together they start to perform armed robberies and get away with it until things get out of hand. "Swag" is a real page turner and highly recommended.
