Susan E. Rice is a distinguished visiting research fellow at American University’s School of International Service and a nonresident senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. 

She was the national security adviser to President Barack Obama from 2013 to 2017. She was the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 2009 to 2013 and a member of the cabinet. She held a variety of roles involving international relations, including assistant secretary of state for African affairs, during the Clinton administration.

Formerly a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, she has written extensively on American foreign policy, national security and development and is a co-editor of “Confronting Poverty: Weak States and U.S. National Security.”
