About Us

Opened in 1959, Sunset has been an example of excellence in academics, activities, and athletics. Located in the Cedar Mill area north of Highway 26, Sunset is one of six comprehensive high schools in the Beaverton School District.

Sunset's strong academic program begins with an emphasis on freshmen success and concludes with the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB).  in making the transition from middle school to high school. Ninth grade teachers are teamed to provide students with support and monitor their progress. As students move through ninth and tenth grades, students are provided with a wider selection of college preparatory and career pathways. Beginning in the 11th grade, students have the opportunity to enter the IB program, which is recognized around the world as a rigorous preparation for college.  Over 55% of our 11th and 12th grade students will enroll in at least one IB course, and over 80% of our graduates will enroll in a college or university.

In addition, Sunset has a comprehensive Advisory Program that offers guidance to students as they prepare for life after high school.  Students meet twice a month to set and review their personal goals and to develop a personalized plan of action. Our counseling and College/Career Center staff have been recognized across the state for their work.

Sunset's activities program includes over 47 student clubs that include a wide range of student interests and activites.  Sunset's Key Club logs countless hours of student service to the community, and the Model United Nations Club has been a leader in the state. Also, the Chess Club was recently the first place team in state competition. Under the direction of our Leadership Program, students have the opportunity to organize activities throughout the school.

Finally, our athletes compete in the demanding Metro League in the state's 6A classificition. Over the past 50 years, we have developed a tradition of excellence, winning 44 state and countless league championships.

While Sunset has a legacy of high achievement, I am most impressed by the strong sense of community. Our students, parents, and staff take a lot pride in being Apollos. I hope you have the opportunity to visit Sunset.

Go Apollos!
