In Short

  • 'The Fall Guy' is an action comedy
  • Ryan Gosling plays a stuntman while Emily Blunt plays a director
  • The chemistry between Gosling and Blunt adds to the entertainment factor

Stuntmen in movies are some of the most important people on set. Their job is to make the hero of the film look good. Often, they risk their own lives to make an action set piece look dangerous and scary. This time around, David Leitch creates an action comedy around the premise of what would happen if a stunt guy had to fill in and play the role of the hero.

What makes ‘The Fall Guy’ impressive is not its wafer-thin plot, but its two global superstar leads - Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. Loosely based on the 1980s TV show of the same name, Gosling plays Colt Seavers, a leading stuntman while Blunt plays Jody Moreno - a debutant director who shares a love-hate relationship with him.

The setting has a lot of scope for comic situations to unfold. The action scenes are real and there seems to be very little CGI or VFX used to choreograph them.

However, action takes a backseat when Ryan and Emily’s chemistry crackles and simmers. Their banter, the flirting and back and forth digs are so much fun that you forget you are actually watching all this happen against the backdrop of a big action scene. There are a lot of references and nostalgia-laden scenes from the 80s and 90s that will make your heart warm. The second half and the scenes leading up to the climax feel rushed. But, overall, the cast delivers the goods.

‘The Fall Guy’ is your best bet to watch a summer blockbuster with real Hollywood superstars. It’s funny, full of wit and escapism. What more would you want as an excuse to beat this terrible heat wave?
