A terrible mistake in scripting that actually hides an interesting story. Or stories. [Full review in Spanish].
August 19, 2020
A mixture of the racial tones, the murderous plot and the humour makes this a confusing mess of storytelling.

Clooney has proven himself talented enough a filmmaker to tell compelling stories, but with his latest endeavor he is in conflict with the message he's trying to get across.

"Suburbicon" wants to be a witty satire of suburban living, a commentary on race relations in America, and a tense murder mystery. A toothless, tedious disappointment, it fails on all accounts.

It's as ridiculous as it is ugly.

Clooney effectively blends 50's era whimsy with coal-black comedy beats and noir thrills, all while satirizing 2017's political landscape.

The film could be described as a mix of Fargo and Blood Simple by the way of Tim Burton. It's undeniably entertaining but is hard to shake the feeling we have seen all this before.
October 17, 2019
It's a sweet, sweet romp with genuine suspense and cartoonish violence that aimed for a frolicsome good ride and hits its mark.

'Suburbicon' is a missed opportunity because it wants to cover too many different things and doesn't know how to do it in a natural way. [Full Review in Spanish]

Given the ghastly result, perhaps the Coens should sue, since it's almost inconceivable that their original idea bore much resemblance to a debacle that unexpectedly has emerged as one of the year's worst films.

Basically, repeatedly working with the Coens didn't turn Clooney into a Coen any more than his playing a doc on E.R. means I'd let him near me with a scalpel.
June 4, 2019
An uneven, often unpleasant satire that comes across as a pale imitation of the Coens' distinctive style.

Comedy is not effectively mixed with a serious thriller, ruining many potential tense moments; leaving the audience confused as to what emotion they should be feeling.

"Suburbicon," a film that, despite checking a lot of the right boxes, simply isn't very good.
February 6, 2019
Suburbicon could've been a great, funny, socially conscious film. Regrettably, it's just not that deep. It's a pretty random film that probably lives up to the expectations of the Cohen brothers.
January 29, 2019
... holds a grip until a certain point but ultimately fails to deliver.
January 26, 2019
Surburbicon proves that sometimes scripts are shelved for a reason.
January 18, 2019
Suburbicon isn't always the most finely tuned of comedies... but the twists are brilliant, the score alternately suspenseful and moving and the message poignant.

The different tones for the almost comedic antics at the Lodges, and the threatening racism outside their neighbours the Mayers, don't work together (with the Mayers reduced to background). Thank goodness for Oscar Isaac's wittily sceptical insurance man.

Despite its roundabout way of making a point on racial ethics, the film is dipped into a half-baked murder mystery that's oddly daring and quite possibly incompetent (although the material works in a head-scratching kind of way).
