Remember those record shop things that used to be around back in the day? Picked this up in one of those.....

For the great non-album track "Open up and bleed". Demo quality sound though.

I accidentally bought this album thinking it was the well known version which is regarded as a classic by many as well as reputedly kicking off the punk turn in the U.K. (by the likes of The Sex Pistols et. al.). It's not. It's a completely different album, though with some overlap to the better known album. First up, it should be noted that the sound quality is not good on this recording...it's all demo quality. However, the better known album with this title also has weak sound quality...but perhaps not as bad as on this version. Here, the sound is dull, distant and biased. Pity the sound quality is not better, as I would have scored it higher otherwise, I think. And it's approaching a tragedy that the great track "Open up and bleed" didn't get the kind of quality studio sound as found in The Stooges' first two studio albums. Anyway, as for the music, I think that the piano playing on this album is good. As for the songs, I can imagine this kind of music being played in a seedy pub with a couple of dozen patrons swigging beer and getting into the music, more or less. Why should you get this album? For the good, non studio album songs. Like "Open up and bleed", "Johanna", "I got a right" and "Pin point eyes". I don't know enough about other non-studio album released by this band to say whether there are better versions of these songs out there...I might have heard one or more of these songs on the remastered Bowie mix of the better known album of this time (as bonus live tracks), but on that release the crowd noise and sound quality problems at the gig detracted from the music. Just guessing, but I think the version of "Open up and bleed" here may be the best you're going to get anywhere...it's a minor classic as it is, but it could have been so much better if it had the production values of the songs on their first two studio albums.

My cd lists this release as being in 2000 and being originally recorded in 1972. Playing time is listed as 52:45 but comes up on my cd player display as 53:32. Not sure of why there is a discrepancy there.

The best songs:

Open up & bleed - "/". Bumped this song up from a small tick to a big tick on second listen. This just might be their greatest ever song...up there with "I wanna be your dog" and "We will fall" (both off of their debut album). It has pretty lead guitar notes and keyboard notes. Lead guitar also plays a solo. The guitar riff for this song is also pretty. Iggy's sometime vocal excesses are toned down at times in this song. For such a pretty song, it's a pity it isn't a studio quality recording...I've heard a version of Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" album, which has bonus demo quality songs...pretty much any act that's ever recorded would upgrade their studio sound for Fleetwood Mac's idea of a 'demo quality' song, I'm guessing! It's that good.

Joanna - "(.)". Runs a lengthy 8:42 minutes. I like the looped lick...quite a groove to it. Good rhythm to this song as well. Iggy sounds quite soulful on this song...like a black brutha. The lyric "I want you right now" brings to mind MC5 who I think had a song of that title on their album "Kick out the jams". The Ramones name check both of these bands, I think, on their song "Rock'n'roll radio"...well, off of their greatest album "End of the century", in any case. This song is easy to sing along to at times...there's a lyrical riff of "Oh yeah!" often. As for the song title itself...couldn't make out the lyric...thought he was commanding you to clap "your hands" or something! Song features the piano and maybe you could describe the lead guitar as "shredding" at times...perhaps...not a guitar expert myself.

Pin point eyes - "[.]". Has chat at the start of the track, turning jammy, then you hear a bluesy rag play...if "rag" is the right term...might be played on the bass, if I'm reading my notes right. "Cool" elements to this song: piano (tinkly, slower honky-tonk type music) and lead guitar (cool, with rich tone to it...actually there are two guitars on this song and both have different tones to them). The bass guitar is noticeable on this song too. My understanding of American slang isn't great...Iggy does use the word "scag"...maybe that's also known as "weed"?

I got a right - "[.]". You think that this is a Deep Purple song at the start, going on the organ and general vibe of the song. Has a familiar keyboard riff...maybe it was turned into a better known song later? Bassy. Not bad.

Songs which feature on the 'real' Raw Power album (or earlier versions of them):

Death trip - Sounds 'distant'. Nice screechy guitar intro then that good, familiar riff kicks in. Not sure, but this track may feature a cello or some such on it. Has the lyric "Sick boy"...I think the British movie "Trainspotting" had a character with this name...and Iggy Pop's classic "Lust for life" was featured in that movie's soundtrack. Movie about drug culture.

Hard to beat - this song may be similar or identical to "Your pretty face is going to Hell" off of their better known "Raw power" album. Track sounds like it was started by pressing a cassette recorder button. Lead guitar and riffing are familiar...if you've heard the Other "Raw power". Outro has a radio announcer speaking.

Raw power - intro features a radio announcer speaking. Guitar sounds chunky early on. Has backing vocals...not sure if the studio album version has this. You hear the sound of a cassette recorder stopping at the end.

The rest:

Head on - intro a la The Doors' "L.A. woman"...and ths song's rhythm guitar and piano playing is redolent of The Doors too (to me The Stooges seem very heavily influenced by this band as well as The Rolling Stones...they're just more of a garage band version of these acts). Actually, you get more of a Jimi Hendrix style intro first, before it quickly turns Doorsy. The bass guitar seems to be coming out mostly of the left hand side whilst the guitar seems more on the right hand side (re speakers/headphones). A jammy track with a dull sound quality to it. Vocals are a bit distant too.

Cock in my pocket - vocals on the right hand side. Piano seems right hand side too...it's got that tinkling/honky-tonk vibe to it. The lead guitar and its tone are both good. Has the upfront lyric "I just want to fuck and I don't want no romance".

Rubber legs - a throbbing rock'n'roll song with tinkling honky-tonk piano. I think Iggy says the name "Maybelline"...which was the name of a woman in the song of that name by Chuck Berry, I believe.

Stooges recommendations:

The Stooges - The Stooges. Has their best songs. 7.5/10

The Stooges - Raw power. The Bowie mix has recently been remastered and contains bonus live tracks. Not sure that the sound quality has been hugely improved, although it was never that good to begin with. The Iggy Pop mix of that studio album is more pounding...so it works on that level...for those who like it hard. 4/5

The Stooges - Fun house. One half Stooges album, one half band jam. 7.25/10

The second disc of Head On sas a better version of the Academy of Music gig than appears on Bomp's Double Danger: Academy of Music / Latin Casino-Live 1973.

A cheapo collection well worth the price asked (if it's something like $3,95). Namely for the great version of "Johanna", which is one of the three essential versions of the song. The other two versions are the soulful take on Kill City and the mean & lean Stooges take on Open Up And Bleed!. The version on this disc clocks in at around nine minutes and has Iggy's punk sneer at it's most abnoxious. Sounds like he's just begging to get his face kicked in by the band.

As for the rest of the album, it has some great tracks, that have already been released on Open Up And Bleed! (and other such collections), as well as the usual lo-fi outtake dross. Sound quality is ok for this kind of release.
