ALL OR NOTHING - The Memoirs of a Drummer Paperback – Illustrated, 30 July 2021

Here lies the story of a man who has lived a life less ordinary. A life of extreme highs and plummeting lows. Through the power of music and with intense drive to succeed, Stoo has exorcised his demons, which in turn has brought about the opportunity to join bands he could have only dreamed of playing with: 999, CONFLICT, RESISTANCE 77, ENGLISH DOGS and THE LURKERS. It’s all here. Read this book and you’ll see that for Stoo ... it was ALL OR NOTHING!

Full disclosure, I’ve known Stoo for years so was there for the good and the bad for a lot of this book. The gig in the blokes second floor flat made me smile. I honestly thought the floor was going to go through and the bloke downstairs confirmed that there was structural damage to his ceiling. My then boyfriend and I were busy at the front door warding off furious neighbours for a fair portion of it all. Great times.
This is a brutally honest read, well written and all true. I couldn’t put it down.
Highly recommend

Great to read a book that documents the era of punk that is sadly shadowed by the first wave of bands. Takes me back to the gigs tucked away in squats and pub function rooms; punx picnics where a bumper bottle of cider is all you need; scuffles with NF skins at the front of the stage. This is the story of a drummer with an x rated CV of work with bands that range from 70s bands like 999 to the progressive hardcore of Conflict.

arts and all look back at the punk rock life of Stoo, aka Stuart Meadows, with booze, drugs and haircuts thrown in. The lockdown found Stoo with plenty of time on his hands what with gigs being cancelled left, right and centre, plus his barber shop (a shop brimming with punk memorabilia) also closing down for periods of time. This is the end result detailing his life from the great times to the low points.

Stoo is a driven man as can be read given the number of bands he has drummed for, which has considerably improved his technique over the decades, although his biggest battle has been fighting his addictions. He has conquered his alcohol and drugs problems but, as he states, you will always be an addict, however he has been clear for ten years now.

His memories of all the gigs he has played (and attended) are crystal clear since stopping the intake which you will find on reading this autobiography. It hasn't been an easy journey for the man but he has come out of it stronger and happier than he has ever been.

If you are into punk rock then this is a must read. I only know Stoo via Facebook although he always struck me as a top man and his story confirms that. Long may he play drums and cut hair.
