Stroud

The town from which the District gets its name, Stroud is situated below the western escarpment of the Cotswold Hills. Noted for its steep streets and vibrant mix of independent shops and cafes, Stroud offers a wide variety of scenery and attractions to welcome visitors and the community alike. It has two award-winning Markets (the Farmers Market (Saturday) in the Cornhill and the Shambles market (Friday and Saturday; Vintage market on Monday) and festivals that run regularly throughout the year. Jasper Conran referred to Stroud as "the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds", the London Evening Standard likened Stroud to "Notting Hill with wellies" and the Daily Telegraph referred to Stroud as "the artistic equivalent of bookish Hay-on-Wye".
In March 2021 The Sunday Times voted Stroud as winner of The Best Place to Live in Britain, commenting on it being "lively, local and fiercely independent". They added "it has excellent schools, convenient transport links and easy access to lots of glorious green space."
Stroud certainly has a wealth of art venues, thriving vintage emporiums, outlets for local makers and a bohemian outlook.

The Slad Valley, Sheepscombe, Bisley and Rodborough are also close by.

It is well served by Train, Bus and Coach, close to the M5 (J13) and within reach of the M4 motorways.

On Street Parking

There is some on street parking in and near the Town Centre at Russell Street, George Street, Gloucester Street and Lansdown. Parking times are limited (often 20 minutes maximum) and parking enforcement quite tenacious. It is advisable to use one of the car parks in town.

Always check signage for the current parking restrictions as the information here may become unintentionally out of date.
