The windows, the pulpit, the altar, the sheer size of it, were incredible. The line was long but diminished as we ate our gelato. No shorts, no midriffs, nothing skimpy. No cell phones, no food, no drink, no noise. There are periodic announcements saying Mesdames et Messieurs….Sssshhhh! Strangely I didn't see any photos of the car ride on this site, so I'm adding one here. Especially interesting is the big Cathedral, the Place Kleber and Petit France. I enjoyed the special exhibit that focused on nationalism, grief and other things during WW I. It houses three museums: the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Decorative Arts. - 2023kat7 contributionsThis is a very nice museum which tells you a lot more in depth about the impressive cathedral of Strasbourg that any other place, but also about the history and art of the region. Here you can see a lot of sculptures in detail, as well as details and small histories captured in the mosaic. There are also hundreds and hundreds of impressive paintings and artifacts.
You will find your own favourite, we found several pieces of art especially memorable: a deeply phiolosophical but also deeply depressive painting of "dead lovers" from 1450 (so depressive that we did not even take a picture); and a group of sculptures picturing a temptress (devil) and foolish virgins (also depicted on the cathedral) as well as impressive wooden heads which look like coming right out of a movie.
All the more so, with the recently added 3D installations you can have a virtual trip of the top of the cathedral looking all the way down - with a really immersive experience which will guaranteed make you dizzy; and experience some other cool VR stuff. You can't even get a cup of coffee or tea. Other than that the visit was good. As the 1200s came to a close it renounced ecclesiastical dominance and became a free city governed by Councils and other authorities.
Becoming French in 1681 under Louis XIV but less than two centuries later it was conquered by Germany. Further back and forth between these two neighbours until 1944 when it became, and remains, French.
So lots to cover. It was interesting to see a display of wooden piles that were used to support part of the city built on marshland. Including the majestic Cathedral.
Military exhibits include cannon balls from the city’s famous arsenal and crossbows. An aspect of the governing Authority was accurate weights and measures.
Gutenberg lived in Strasbourg during key developments in his printing press and printed books flourished in the city during the latter half of the 1400s with predominantly bibles and religious material published in about a dozen houses.
