'Corridors of Power' was one of my set 'O Level' books back in the dark ages. I was too young to appreciate its finer points then, but age and experience have changed my opinions somewhat. Snow's series of books charts the journeys of various powerful and influential characters through the middle of the 20th century, a time of great change and greater challenges. Our guide, Lewis Elliot, is both a facilitator and an observer, involved yet at the same time detached from the actual hostilities, but interesting nonetheless. Academia, politics and science are the prominent playing fields, where the upper-classes enjoy - and also suffer - the power and rewards their efforts bring. It is an epic journey and a brilliant record of the period. There are two other authors who recount their own journeys through similar histories - Anthony Powell's series of novels 'Dance to the Music of Time' is as impressive, with a cast of memorable characters, but my personal favourite is Simon Raven's 'Alms for Oblivion' set of ten novels, all of which are deliciously decadent, filled with a crew of low-lifes enjoying the highest levels of debauchery. The final book of the series, 'The Survivors', set in 1970, is a classic denouement of the class. These radio plays are brilliantly produced and acted, well worth visiting, a record of a world that no longer exists, but the memory of which lingers still in the gentlemens' clubs and country houses.
