Holland 1-1 Ecuador: Ecuador fight back to earn a valuable point against Holland thanks to Enner Valencia's second-half strike, before the forward limps off with serious-looking knee injury... as result sees hosts Qatar knocked OUT

Holland have illuminated so many World Cups with their vibrant shirts and metronomic passing rhythms that it is hard not to notice when something goes awry.

When the mechanism fails as it did against Ecuador. When the Clockwork Oranje feels a little bit more Chocolate Oranje.

Here they were fortunate to escape with a point, which keeps them in control of Group A but did not spare them this withering assessment from boss Louis van Gaal.

'Not a good match, not at all,' said Van Gaal. 'We could not pass the ball to our own players. That's not only the fault of the player on the ball but others. Plus, we lost every challenge. Every duel. Every second ball.'

The perceived wisdom is that England would do well to swerve the Dutch in the last 16.

Van Gaal's team should go on to win Group A. They have the already-eliminated hosts Qatar in their final game and, although they may require a few goals that is a better place to be than Ecuador who must beat Senegal before goals come into it.

Senegal can also qualify, but Gustavo Alfaro's team from South America were by some distance the better team here in this draw at the Khalifa Stadium.

They had 14 attempts at goal compared to Holland's two. More energy and more imagination.

It's impossible to reach too far ahead, funny old game as it is, but England will face one of these three if they progress from Group B and Ecuador are a definite threat. Holland simply never got going despite the fillip of an early goal by Cody Gakpo.

Ecuador fought back and deserved their equaliser, scored by Enner Valencia, early in the second half. It was his third goal of the World Cup, taking him top of the Golden Boot race, but he left the pitch on a stretcher near the end, his hand over his face and was later seen icing a knee on the bench.

When this group concludes on Tuesday, Ecuador will also be without Jhegson Mendez against Senegal after he collected a second yellow card in as many games. 'Senegal will be tougher than this one, we will have to defend,' said Ecuador boss Gustavo Alfaro.

Gakpo got the Dutch off to a flier with a goal inside six minutes. Nathan Ake swept the ball forward out of defence. Steven Bergwijn linked up with Davy Klaassen and he found Gakpo, who took a touch to create space before finding the net from 20 yards.

It was his second of the World Cup. He opened the scoring with late header against Senegal on Monday and here he claimed the first goal again. Gakpo is certainly influential. He has 13 goals and 17 assists for PSV Eindhoven this season, catching the eye of wealthy suitors.

Ecuador hauled themselves back into the contest. Gradually at first but, by half-time, they were on top and working Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert. Valencia cut inside from the left, sped away from Denzel Dumfries and drew a smart save, low to his left.

If Gakpo is one of the emerging storylines of the World Cup, then Noppert is another. Handed a debut by Van Gaal against Senegal, on Monday, this was only a second taste of international football for the tall Heerenveen 'keeper.

He was beaten in first half stoppage time when Ecuador thought they had an equaliser. Angelo Preciado took aim from distance and his effort deflected into the net by Pervis Estupinan.

It was ruled out because Jackson Porozo was standing in front of Noppert, in a clear offside position.

Ecuador's disappointment did not last. They were level soon after returning for the second half. Moises Caicedo released Brighton teammate Estupinan whose low drive on the angle drew another splendid save from Noppert.

The rebound was kind to Valencia who tapped in his third of the tournament. Virgil van Dijk led the protests for offside but Valencia timed his run past Ake and was alive to convert a simple chance.

'Valencia is top-level when he wears (the) Ecuador jersey,' said Argentine Alfaro. 'Sometimes he has been criticised unfairly. He is going through such a strong spell.'

At half-time, Van Gaal had introduced Memphis Depay, who is returning from injury and being used sparingly. He looked sharp for half an hour against Senegal but had little impact on this occasion.

'Memphis hardly got the ball,' said Van Gaal. 'If it reached him, it was in difficult circumstances. He couldn't show qualities but that was nothing to do with him and everything to do with the team at the time. He became a victim of that.'

Ecuador were in the ascendency and continuing to threaten Noppert's goal. Gonzalo Plata rattled a shot against the bar before the Dutch restored some order and closed out for a point.

The England vs USA live blog is below - with coverage from the esteemed Dan Ripley.

That's all from me!

18:05

Here's Sportsmail's match report from the game. An updated version will follow shortly!

I hope you enjoyed the game, and see you next time.

17:57
FULL TIME: Holland 1-1 Ecuador

90+6: That's it! The sides share a point. Great performance from Ecuador - they were better than Holland and in the end Louis van Gaal's side may well take that.

17:55
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

90+4: Gustavo Alfaro, the energetic Argentine in charge of Ecuador, is still bellowing out instructions from the sidelines.

Preciado gets ready to take a throw deep in Dutch territory. He looks absolutely knackered to be fair, the 24-year-old from Genk. Done really well today. Corner coming up...

17:52
CLOSE! Holland 1-1 Ecuador

90+1: Oof, not far away! Andries Noppert has been a bit lax with a couple of clearances, and this time he gets caught.

His clearance is blocked by new sub Kevin Rodriguez and he is lucky it spins narrowly wide. Careful, lad!

Into six minutes of stoppage time now - can either side find a winner?

17:50
DOUBLE CHANGE!

88: Two subs for Ecuador - winger Romario Ibarra and young target man Kevin Rodriguez are on for Gonzalo Plata and Enner Valencia.

Valencia is being carried off on a stretcher and this is a nasty one. His World Cup could be over, and he's covering his face with his hands, probably hiding the tears. Poor bloke - he's been brilliant today.

17:48
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

86: What a waste! Sub Berghuis, who's had next to no impact, fails to clear the first man. Got to do better, Stevie.

Oh no! Enner Valencia is down and he looks really hurt. He's clutching his knee and has his hands on his head. He went down with no one near him. This looks worrying.

17:46
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

85: Apparently around 95,000 people are following the game on a live blog by a three-letter public broadcaster we won't mention. Hopefully there are more of you lovely fans following here, eh?

Oof, scything tackle by Caicedo on Nathan Ake. Mistimed not malicious, so not a yellow. But there's a dangerous set piece coming up...

17:44
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

82: Now with around 10 minutes left, maybe a little more, how happy do you think the two sides will be with a draw? Ecuador look the more likely to win it - they know they have a tricky test in Senegal next.

Holland, meanwhile, face one of the worst World Cup sides so far at this tournament in Qatar next up - and they can be pretty sure they'll win that. So the point today could be more valuable for Holland.

If they can hold on, that is.

17:42
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

80: Angelo Preciado, constantly and frustratingly mispronounced by the commentators as 'Praicedo' (I think they're confused with Moises Caicedo), lashes the ball 85,205 feet over the bar after a corner is cleared away.

Got to go for the volley there to be fair.

17:40
Double switch for Holland! Holland 1-1 Ecuador

Teun Koopmeiners and Cody Gakpo off, Marten de Roon and Wout Weghorst on.

Weghorst, all 6ft 6ins of him, the Burnley legend (kidding), couldn't be a more different player than Gakpo.

It's a bit simplistic me saying this, but Van Gaal has essentially gone: 'Let's get it up to the big man, lads'.

17:39
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

77: Sarmiento wins a free-kick. Decent start from him. By the by, Enner Valencia could be on for the Golden Boot...

Some subs being prepared for Holland, will bring them to you when they're confirmed. The tempo has slightly sagged now, but Ecuador are dictating possession, with Holland sitting back.

Van Gaal will want to change that. Jurrien Timber makes about his seventh foul without getting a yellow somehow!

17:36
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

75: Earlier on I thought Edgar Davids was watching from the stands - he's actually part of Louis van Gaal's coaching team!

15 minutes left plus added time. '30 then,' quips Clive Tyldesley.

17:34
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

74: Off comes Michael Estrada, on comes Ecuador's THIRD Brighton player - promising winger Jeremy Sarmiento.

Can the young magician conjure something late on?

17:33
Here's how close Plata came! Holland 1-1 Ecuador

Can anyone see the ball in that bottom pic?

17:32
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

71: Lots of tough tackles today!

17:29
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

67: Estrada tries to find Gonzalo Plata down the right but the pass was overhit and goes straight out. Both Plata and boss Gustavo Alfaro yell in frustration.

A sub for Holland: Ajax midfielder Steven Berghuis replaces club team-mate Davy Klaassen.

17:26
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

65: But the Dutch still have some danger about them! Gakpo holds it up nicely and moves it on to Teun Koopmeiners... but his left-footed first-time shot is well over. Waste.

Enner Valencia says: 'Keep your heads, lads...'

17:24
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

62: This game is heating up all right, Piero Hincapie throwing himself into a full-blooded challenge on a Dutch attacker.

This game is fast, frenetic and furious - and that suits Ecuador. Holland are struggling to cope at the moment.

Just as I say that, Memphis Depay plays a nice one-two with Gakpo but is robbed. Then a massive long ball later, Valencia lays it back to Estrada... and his shot is just about snuffed out by Nathan Ake!

End-to-end stuff this!

17:21
SO CLOSE! SO UNLUCKY! Holland 1-1 Ecuador

58: UNBELIEVABLE! Angelo Preciado does about 14 step overs and puts in a super cross, Enner Valencia's powerful shot towards goal is well blocked by Virgil van Dijk, it comes out to young Gonzalo Plata, who fires it on goal...

But it rebounds with a percussive smack off the crossbar! Inches away!

17:18
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

56: Cool as a frozen cucumber in the North Pole, Enner Valencia. If I scored a World Cup goal for my country I'd be shirt off, middle fingers up to the crowd, screaming with delight.

Valencia just stood still and mocked signing his name in mid-air. He's certainly written his name on this World Cup storyline. What a guy.

Elsewhere, Jhegson Mendez gets the first yellow of the game for a silly tackle. Not much in it but it was a needless challenge. He will miss their final group game against Senegal on Tuesday.

17:15
Here's how he did it! Holland 1-1 Ecuador
17:14
Valencia on fire! Holland 1-1 Ecuador

53: Enner Valencia has now scored Ecuador's last six World Cup goals.

He becomes just the fourth man to do that, after Eusebio for Portugal in 1966, Paolo Rossi for Italy in 1982 and Oleg Salenko for Russia in 1994. Hero.

17:13
Holland 1-1 Ecuador

51: Now I have no skin in the game tonight, I'm a total neutral, but you do love to see these scenes. Ecuador fans absolutely BOUNCING in the stands.

17:09
GOAL! Holland 1-1 Ecuador

48: And NOW we're level! Enner Valencia with it! But Holland are appealing for offside...

Ecuador win the ball off Frenkie de Jong, the ball is played out to Pervis Estupinan down the left, he races in on goal and smashes it towards goal. Noppert does well to push it out...

But Enner Valencia makes it first to the rebound and taps home. And he's definitely onside! It does count this time! 38 goals in 78 appearances for his country, and the 33-year-old joins a joyful team celebration.

17:08
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

46: The ball accidentally hits the ref and Ecuador get a free kick in a dangerous position. Estupinan bends it in nicely again and La Tri get the first head on it...

But the tallest player at the World Cup, Noppert, rises highest to claim. A giant in all senses of the word.

17:05
WE'RE UNDERWAY AGAIN! Holland 1-0 Ecuador

My guess was wrong! It's Depay on for Steven Bergwijn.

And we're off again in the second half! Here we go...

17:04
Walking in Memphis...

There will be a sub at half time for Holland... and it's the talismanic forward Memphis Depay coming on. Who's off? My guess is Davy Klaassen.

17:01
A costly offside

It was a frustrating offside flag for Ecuador. Centre back Jackson Porozo (right) did not come back from an offside position - he could have but was slow in doing so - and his position probably didn't have much effect on the shot of Estupinan (second right) going in.

But Porozo was offside, and he was in the way of Noppert, who was unsighted. Noppert probably wouldn't have got there but that's irrelevant. Annoying, though, of course.

16:57
Here's that incident again...

From ecstasy to frustration!

16:54
HALF TIME: Holland 1-0 Ecuador

And that's the break! Ecuador players are confronting the officials and there is a smattering of boos in the crowd, but it seemed fair enough to me.

That's the break. Gustavo Alfaro has a big team-talk. For Louis van Gaal? 'More of the same please lads'!

16:49
GOAL RULED OUT! Holland 1-0 Ecuador

45+3: GOAL! NO! RULED OUT! The corner is cleared, Preciado smashes it back in, Pervis Estupinan flicks it in and he celebrates wildly.

But it's ruled out for offside! Late drama in the half. Estupinan definitely wasn't offside but team-mate Jackson Porozo was stood right in front of Noppert in an offside position and was blocking the goalie.

Probably the right call for me, but I'll wait for the replay...

16:48
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

45+2: Good ball! Valencia got up high and made good contact with his head but it was well blocked by a Dutch defender, I believe Van Dijk, but don't quote me on that.

Corner in the last moment of the half... and it's an equaliser! No!

16:46

45+1: Cody Gakpo hasn't done much since his goal, but when you've scored the only one of the game, who cares?

His goal had an xG (expected goal) value of 0.04, by the way. It shows what a great finish it was on his weaker foot.

Estupinan gets down the left again... but dallies with his cross and Denzel Dumfries blocks it. That could be the last chance of the half, with three minutes of stoppage time.

Haha, Timber and Estrada square up again, forgetting the ball and wrestling each other using the top halves of their body! Ecuador free kick, Estupinan over it...

16:42
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

41: Five minutes for Ecuador to get a goal just before half time. This match has absolutely flown by.

A bit of push and shove off the ball between Valencia and Dumfries sees Algerian ref step in suddenly looking concerned. They break apart quickly but this game is heating up nicely.

The camera pans to Dutch midfield legends Wesley Sneijder and Edgar Davids in the stands. What players they were.

Davids in his Ajax and Juventus days, that is, not when he was getting sent off every other game playing at left back for Crystal Palace aged 37 in the Championship.

16:39
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

37: The immaculate jaw of Piero Hincapie juts out in temporary satisfaction as the Bayer Leverkusen star makes a brilliantly timed slide tackle to deny two Dutch attackers.

But then he's penalised for fouling Steven Bergwijn. This kind of thing, breaking up the tempo and flow of the game, is great for Holland. They've weathered the Ecuador storm, it seems.

16:37
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

35: Ecuador are an athletic, combative team. So difficult for Holland to play their trademark passing game. They're stepping in with real bite to every tackle. Sounds basic but not every team do it...

Plenty for the ref to keep an eye on!

16:34
SAVE! Holland 1-0 Ecuador

32: GOOD SAVE! Enner Valencia, the danger man, cuts inside with ease and pings it towards the bottom corner but Andries Noppert gets down smartly to turn it behind.

He'd have been disappointed to let it past him, the Heerenveen goalkeeper, but it was still a save he had to make.

Valencia (10), Estrada (9) and Gakpo (6) have made the most receptions between the midfield and opposition defensive lines, according to ITV.

16:31
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

29: Holland have a corner, their first of the game I think, but it's cleared. There's a sniff of a counter attack but Enner Valencia overcooks the through ball and Frenkie de Jong shows a nice turn of pace to keep the ball away from Michael Estrada.

Bit of push and shove between Timber and Estrada, who have both had lively starts.

Different emotions from the managers!

16:29
CLOSE! Holland 1-0 Ecuador

26: Nearly! Ecuador are suddenly right on top here. Estupinan with a lovely ball down the left to Valencia, who fires in a cross.

A lovely flick from Michael Estrada and Moises Caicedo gambles... but the ball goes the other way and it's a narrow escape for Holland. Now Holland are sitting back deep and Ecuador's centre backs have the ball on the halfway line!

Can Louis van Gaal's men wrest back some control?

16:26
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

23: Oh, the first good Ecuador attack of the game! First they break down the right and a cross is cleared just before Valencia can get onto it.

Then they attack down the left, Moises Caicedo starting the move before Estupinan and Valencia feed him into space down the left, he bursts into the box and lays it back... but Virgil van Dijk clears.

Estupinan digs out another lovely cross and again Van Dijk is in the right spot to head it away. Much better from Ecuador.

16:22
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

19: Ouch. Poor Denzel Dumfries. Denzel Washington's namesake goes on a galloping run through midfield but is pulled back on one side, sandwiched on the other side and as he falls down, the defender smashes a clearance straight into him.

Probably a free kick. Looked like it stung. The cameras are now showing a delighted Dutch fan banging a drum, the percussive stings reverberating through the screen. The Oranje fans are loving this.

16:19
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

17: Lovely ball from Nathan Ake to Davy Klaassen but the attack comes to nothing.

Dutch wing-backs Denzel Dumfries (right) and Daley Blind (left) are really high up the pitch, pushing Ecuador's wing-backs Preciado and Estupinan all the way back.

Alfaro will want that to change.

16:16
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

14: This could get a bit tasty. A couple of meaty challenges lead to free-kicks. It's not boiling over yet but both sides are putting their foot in.

Timber does really well to hold off Enner Valencia. Just 21, the Ajax man.

Below is how Gakpo gave Holland the lead. He is naturally right footed but powered the opener in with his left. You'd never have known he's not a leftie!

16:12
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

9: Not the start Gustavo Alfaro's men would have wanted.

Jurrien Timber is penalised for a trip on Enner Valencia and Ecuador have a free kick. They play it short, it's worked into the box... and it's CLOSE!

Valencia swung his left foot and hit a viciously bouncing half-volley, but Virgil van Dijk was perfectly positioned and nodded away. Think it was just about going wide, but still. Good defending.

Decent response from the South American side.

16:09
Holland 1-0 Ecuador

Ecuador finally concede! Luckily for them, they have almost the whole game to recover.

I can confirm it's the fastest goal of the World Cup finals so far: five minutes and four seconds. Raced out of the gate, the Dutch.

16:05
GOAL! Holland 1-0 Ecuador

5: What a goal! So soon into the game!

Ake plays a ball up to Bergwijn, the defender nicks it off him but it's loose and it rolls through to Davy Klaassen. The Ajax man holds it up well and lets Cody Gakpo take it off his toe.

Gakpo shifts it the other way, to his left, and has just a flash of space. It's enough. He whacks a beautiful left-footed curling effort into the back of the net. Lovely strike. He's bang in form.

16:05
Holland 0-0 Ecuador

3: Uh oh. The game suddenly stops, the ref tells Holland to kick it out and it immediately becomes clear why.

Right wing-back Angelo Preciado - excellent against Qatar - has gone down clutching his groin area. It looks sore. Very early in the game - he's got about 100 minutes left to play if the added time farce continues as expected.

But he's back on, a little gingerly at first. One to keep an eye on. The battle of the wing-backs could be key today.

16:02
Holland 0-0 Ecuador

1: Ecuador have started positively. By the way, Enner Valencia is on the left wing, Michael Estrada up front.

Of course, Holland's talismanic striker Memphis Depay isn't fit to start, though he came off the bench in the opening win against Senegal.

Will we see him later today? Both sides are pressing quite high, especially Holland.

16:00
KICK OFF: Holland 0-0 Ecuador

The whistle blows and away we go! Holland in their traditional all-orange, Ecuador in a changed strip of dark blue, white shorts and socks.

15:58
A note of caution

Ecuador players are absolutely belting out a pomp and circumstance-like military-sounding anthem. Powerful.

A note of caution - several players who are on a booking need to avoid a yellow card today or they will be ruled out of the final group game.

They include Holland's Matthijs de Ligt, benched today, and Ecuador duo Moises Caicedo and Jhegson 'Sebas' Mendez, the central midfield pair.

Watch out tonight, lads. Kick-off is imminent

15:56
HERE WE GOOOO

The players are out on the pitch. Holland anthem on. Primed and ready.

In case you were wondering, Ecuador have the joint-third youngest squad at this tournament, behind only Ghana and the USA, and level with Spain.

That's shown in their starting line-up with nine of their players having an average age of 23. Throw in Enner Valencia (33) and goalkeeper Hernan Galindez (35) and that figure balloons to a sprightly 25.

15:53
15:52
15:52
Valencia injury worry?

More betting adverts on in the break, which is, of course, a disgrace given the problems players past and present and fans have with gambling. But that's just me.

I've just heard some news of a potential injury to Ecuador captain, record goalscorer and talisman Enner Valencia. Boss Gustavo Alfaro said yesterday: 'The tests show he doesn't have an injury but the trauma is very serious.'

Yet he starts. How long will he last?

15:49
T-minus 10 minutes or so...

We're SO CLOSE to kick-off. We've had all the build-up, team news and statistics ahead of the game.

Now we're a little over 10 minutes away from the start of the game, and I genuinely can't wait.

15:46
15:43
15:41

The man with the most goals and assists in any European top-flight league this season is not a striker playing for Manchester CityReal Madrid or Bayern Munich, but a 23-year-old at PSV Eindhoven.

Here's our scouting report from Sportsmail's Kathryn Batte. Gakpo scored the opener against Senegal and he will likely be the danger man again.

15:38

And Holland boss Van Gaal recently had a very public warm embrace... (Not like that).

See below! A heart-warming moment.

15:37

He's 71!

15:35
Players are out warming up

Virgil van Dijk (centre, bottom picture) certainly looks pumped up, eh?

15:30
The World Cup - bringing fans together

So nice to see 'rival' or opposition fans sitting together, just enjoying the game and the spectacle without fears of trouble.

The atmosphere is bubbling along nicely at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha...

15:25

The full-time result from earlier, by the way, was Qatar 1-3 Senegal. The hosts are now all but out of the tournament and face a fight to avoid being the worst performing World Cup host country of all time.

Ouch. Updated group table and Sportsmail's match report is below.

15:20
TEAM NEWS REACTION: Ecuador

Just the one change for Gustavo Alfaro's side, and it brings with it a change of system: Winger Romario Ibarra is out, centre back Jackson Porozo is in.

They played an attacking 4-4-2 with two wide players against Qatar, but they have now switched to a five-at-the-back system.

Porozo will line up alongside Hincapie and Felix Torres at the back, Estupinan and Preciado at wing-back, a duo of Caicedo and Sebas Mendez in midfield.

The front three sees Enner Valencia, Michael Estrada and Gonzalo Plata link up. Understandably, they have switched to a more defensive system, matching up to Holland's wing-back system.

Will it work? We'll find out in about 40 minutes...

15:15
TEAM NEWS REACTION: Holland

Three changes from Louis van Gaal's side - Jurrien Timber comes in at right centre back for Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt, who had an ordinary first game.

Teun Koopmeiners replaces Steven Berghuis in central midfield and Davy Klaassen replaces striker Vincent Janssen. Klaassen drops in behind the forwards and Cody Gakpo goes up front alongside Steven Berwijn.

Koopmeiners and Klaassen both had an impact off the bench, with Berghuis and Janssen subdued in that first game.

Team news out shortly...

Team news will be with you imminently!

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD: Holland vs Ecuador

Holland have only ever played Ecuador twice in their history - both friendly matches. On March 1, 2006, the Oranje beat the South American side 1-0 thanks to a Dirk Kuyt winner.

While on May 17, 2014, La Tricolor took an early lead through Jefferson Montero before Robin van Persie equalised, the game finishing 1-1.

Today, if you're interested in this kind of thing, the odds show 52 per cent chance of a Holland win, 21 per cent of an Ecuador win and 27 per cent chance of a draw. Hard to look past Holland, isn't it. Bet it won't be easy though!

14:54
But they're not the only ones!
14:48
The Oranje shining bright!

They certainly light up the tournament, those Holland fans. To be fair, you can't exactly miss them.

14:45
TEAM PREDICTIONS: Ecuador

There is no reason for Ecuador to change a winning side - although Brighton starlet Jeremy Sarmiento will hope to push for a start.

Brighton pair Pervis Estupinan (an attacking left-back) and Moises Caicedo (an all-action midfielder) are dangerous, with Enner Valencia the captain and key man up front.

Bayer Leverkusen wonderkid Piero Hincapie and Genk full-back Angelo Preciado did well in defence last time out too.

TEAM PREDICTIONS: Holland

Andries Noppert, a surprise selection between the sticks, made his international debut against the Lions of Teranga and performed well.

Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt looked shaky at times and may be replaced by Stefan de Vrij or Jurrien Timber, while Barcelona's Memphis Depay is in contention to start after a lively cameo off the bench.

Frenkie de Jong had a middling game in midfield and will be looking to improve but is unlikely to be dropped.

Group A: As things stand

A reminder of how we're shaping up: after the first round of matches, Holland and Ecuador are level on points at the top of Group A thanks to their 2-0 wins against Senegal and Qatar respectively.

With Holland looking strong and Qatar expected to finish bottom, Ecuador know even getting just a point against Louis van Gaal's side would put them in a brilliant position to qualify ahead of Senegal for the knockout stages.

If they finish second in the group behind Holland, they could face England in the round of 16, if Gareth Southgate's side top Group A.

14:14

Senegal took the lead just before half time via Boulaye Dia, who capitalised on a defensive mistake...

And there's been another goal! But WHO FOR? Find out below...

14:11
When and where is the game?

The match takes place on Friday, November 25. It will kick off at 5pm UK time, midday US time and 4am on Saturday morning Australia time.

The Khalifa International Stadium, also known as the National Stadium, will play host to the match. It has an official capacity of 45,416.

Ecuador vs Holland: Focus on qualifying

Gustavo Alfaro's side finished fourth in the CONMEBOL qualifying tournament and showed they were defensively solid by keeping six consecutive clean sheets.

Ecuador even managed to secure a 1-1 draw against both Argentina and Brazil during the qualifying stages.

Holland, meanwhile, finished top of their group, losing just one game in qualifying under the watchful eye of Louis van Gaal in his third and presumably final spell in charge of the country.

I will obviously bring all that info to you in the coming hours before the game in any case.

Big drama as Qatar's Akram Afif goes down like a two-ton lead balloon inside the penalty area and it looks for all money like it will be a penalty but referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz says NO and VAR don't even seem to check it.

Afif was running into the box with Sarr chasing behind but to the side, and Afif cleverly stepped across into Sarr's line of running, resulting in Sarr smashing into Afif from behind.

There was loads of contact and Sarr didn't get the ball but - and I know I'm biased - I think it's a great call. Afif had no intention of carrying on with the ball and threw himself across Sarr hoping for a penalty.

That said, it makes an absolute mockery of the penalty awarded to Tom Daley Cristiano Ronaldo yesterday against Ghana. It's the inconsistency that frustrates fans. ANYWAY.

Probably my second team, Senegal

I'll be willing the Lions of Teranga (that's Senegal to the uninitiated) against Qatar. They're my second favourite team at the World Cup, perhaps, along with Ghana.

What other countries are you guys supporting at the World Cup? Let us know on Twitter @MailSport!

We're underway in the 1pm kick-off between Qatar and Senegal, two teams also in Group A with Holland and Ecuador.

I'll of course let you know what's going on but for full coverage from Sportsmail, follow our live blog below by the stellar Sam Brookes.

STAT ATTACK: Ecuador

Ecuador have won just two of their seven matches against European sides (drawn one, lost four), beating Croatia in 2002 and Poland in 2006.

The South American country have actually kept a clean sheet in their last seven games in all competitions (won three, drawn four), with Argentina and Manchester City star Julian Alvarez the last player to score against them - all the way back in March!

12:51
STAT ATTACK: Holland

Holland have lost just two of their 14 World Cup matches against South American sides (won eight, drawn four), losing the 1978 final against Argentina and the quarter-final against Brazil in 1994.

The Oranje have also kept a clean sheet in their last four World Cup games - their longest ever run in the competition. The last country to keep five in a row were Switzerland, between 2006 and 2010.

How come Switzerland didn't win it?!

And speaking of Holland vs Ecuador...

Here's how Group A is looking.

Both sides know even a loss today doesn't prevent progress.

Ecuador face Senegal and Holland face Qatar at the same time (3pm GMT) on Tuesday to decide the group.

12:37

Hugely controversial World Cup hosts Qatar will watch their national side aim to avoid elimination against Senegal.

The west African side lost their opener 2-0 against Holland and know defeat would end their tournament. A lot riding on it for both...

Of course, this live blog will include updates from that game, but we're focused on Holland vs Ecuador.

As you might have heard by now, Wales lost 2-0 against Iran in a game full of thrills and spills.

Wayne Hennessey was rightly sent off for a flying knee into Mehdi Taremi, after which Iran scored twice due to two Joe Allen mistakes.
