[Answer]

Steve Garvey was not the first Los Angeles Dodgers player to win the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award, that honor went to Maury Wills (1962), but he was the first to receive the honor twice (1974, 1978). Join Baseball Almanac as we take a look at some additional numbers of interest as they relate to Mr. Clean:

1 Steve Garvey won the National League Most Valuable Player in 1974, the first time a first baseman had won the award in a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform, and their first right-handed hitting first baseman to receive the honor in franchise history. Do you remember what left-handed Brooklyn Dodgers first baseman won the MVP Award in 1941? [Answer]

2 Steve Garvey was the second player ever selected to an All-Star team (1974) as a write-in candidate by fans, and he did not disappoint, collecting a single, a double, driving in a run, scoring once, and some brilliant glove work, earning the ASG MVP. Do you remember who the first player ever selected to an All-Star team as a write-in candidate was? Clue: It was during the 1970 All-Star Game. [Answer]

4 Steve Garvey won four consecutive Gold Glove Awards at first base, a fielding that had been duplicated four times before in baseball history; Vic Power, Bill White, Wes Parker, and George Scott.

6 Steve Garvey only wore the number six during his entire nineteen year career. With the Dodgers, he wore #6 fourteen years, the most ever after the franchise moved to Los Angeles, passing the mark once held by Ron Fairly, who wore it from 1961 through 1969. Mr. Clean "only" wore #6 for five seasons in San Diego, but the Padres retired his number in his honor on April 16, 1988.

9 Steve Garvey was selected as the starting first baseman in nine different All-Star Games, setting the major league record. What Hall of Fame first baseman was "only" selected as to start eight times? [Answer]

1,207 Steve Garvey appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated on April 25, 1983, where he was labeled The Iron Man. This was because he had already set the National League (NL) record for most consecutive games played and in-pursuit of the major league record held at that time by Lou Gehrig (2,130). Later that year, Garvey broke his thumb in a collision at home plate, ending the streak with a still-standing NL mark, 1,207 straight games played, the fourth longest consecutive games played streak in baseball history through today.

Despite the accolades mentioned above, being a defensive beast at first base (81 career errors in 2,059 games played), and absolute hitting machine (six career 200-hit seasons), Steve Garvey spent 15 years (1993-2007) on the Baseball Writers' Association of America Hall of Fame ballot, but failed to reach the 75% required for Cooperstown. He has been considered since by various Hall of Fame committees, yet remains in the Hall of Great, an oversight that might be fixed by the Modern Baseball Era Committee in 2024.
