Peter Grant says Steve Clark has been ‘harsh’ on player who is so ‘important’ to Celtic

Now that the international break is over, we can all put our focus firmly back on Celtic’s bid to defend the title this weekend.

Livingston is up next for Brendan Rodgers and he will be delighted that all of the players that left to join their countries return to Celtic with a clean bill of health.

However, Rodgers may not be pleased that two of his players were taken away by Steve Clarke for Scotland as they were barely used over the two week period when they could have been home resting.

Anthony Ralston got around 35 minutes of action against the Netherlands and was then an unused sub for the Nothern Ireland defeat alongside Greg Taylor who didn’t feature for a single minute in either game.

And it was Taylor’s predicament that had Peter Grant claiming that the Celtic fullback has been harshly treated by Clarke.

The former Celtic hero says that Taylor’s chances of going to the Euros in the summer where slim after what Clarke did in the game against the Irish.

Greg Taylor will not make Scotland’s Euro squad

Grant said [The Go Radio Football Show], “These two are going to be interesting. I think [John] Souttar and [Greg] Taylor will miss out.

“I think Greg’s final nail on the coffin from last night was when Andy Robertson goes off. And he’s been in every game every squad and he’s not played him.

“And if you’re going to go with wing-backs, that was an opportunity to play him if he’s not going to go to a back four.

“And I think it’s quite harsh on him because I think you’ve even seen in Celtic games, the supporters have been a bit negative towards him during the season so far. I think they realised how important he was for them when he was out the side.

“And I just think it’s unfair for him as he’s been part of the group for a long time.”

Taylor was superb for Celtic during Ange Postecoglou’s domination of Scotland in his two seasons as the Hoops gaffer.

And whilst his form hasn’t been anywhere near those levels, the drop off in quality when Alexandro Bernabei took over to cover for his injury was stark.

Taylor deserves a place in the Scotland squad but when you look at who is in front of him in the pecking order, it just shows you why he doesn’t feature as much as he deserves.

Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson have both excelled for Scotland and have been pivotal in ensuring they got to back-to-back Euros.

Taylor’s time will come. Let’s just hope he gets that call to go to Germany because his form for Celtic deserves it.
