Ronnie O’Sullivan steps up his quest for a record eighth World Championship title with a quarter-final showdown against Stuart Bingham at The Crucible.

O’Sullivan is appearing in a record 32nd consecutive World Championship and is vying to become the outright most successful player in the modern history of the competition.

Having already secured the UK Championship and Masters titles this season, the 48-year-old is also looking to create another slice of personal history by recording a first seasonal Triple Crown, with only Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry and Mark Williams having achieved the feat to date.

O’Sullivan, who made his World Championship debut at the tender age of 17 back in 1993, has gone on to reach eight Crucible finals and has made three maximum breaks, including his record fastest in 1997 at five minutes and eight seconds.

This season, ‘The Rocket’ has handpicked his playing schedule to great effect, with his UK Championship and World Grand Prix triumphs taking his tally of career ranking titles to 41.

He has also won The Masters, Shanghai Masters and Saudi World Masters and finished runner-up at the Tour Championship earlier this month.

O’Sullivan opened up with a 10-1 demolition of Jackson Page in Round One before dispatching Ryan Day 13-7 and is yet to get out of third gear so far by his high standards.

However, the seven-time champion will be poised for his first significant test against a player who knows what it takes to beat him in this famous arena.

Bingham has won just three of his 21 previous meetings with O’Sullivan, but notably triumphed in the quarter-finals here in 2015 on his way to capturing a maiden world title.

O’Sullivan had won both of their previous Crucible clashes prior to that occasion and has gone on to win their last seven consecutive contests across all competitions since.

Bingham, who has dropped to 29th in the world rankings after a barren two years on the tour, defeated Stuart Carrington and Louis Heathcote in the qualifying rounds to seal his 14th consecutive Crucible campaign.

The six-time ranking event winner has recaptured his best form on the sport’s biggest stage, defeating in-form Gary Wilson 10-5 before edging out Jack Lisowski 13-11 in a gripping contest.

Debutant here in 2000, ‘Ball Run’ is making his fifth quarter-final appearance and only his second ranking quarter-final appearance in as many years.

The match gets under way from 2.30pm BST on Tuesday for a maximum of eight frames, resuming at 2.30pm on Wednesday, before being played to a finish over the best of 25 from 7pm that evening.

Either 2019 World Champion Judd Trump or back-to-back quarter-finalist Jak Jones will await the winner in the semi-finals.
