Draw against Breidablik

3/22/2024

1. FC Köln drew 2:2 with Breidablik Kópavogur on the penultimate day of the training camp in Algorfa. Faride Alidou and Damion Downs had given FC the lead twice, though Kristinn Steindórsson and Benjamin Stokke were able to restore parity on both occasions.

Stalemate at the break

FC began with purpose and opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Sargis Adamyan’s chipped pass set up Steffen Tigges, who was initially denied by Anton Ari Einarsson. However, Faride Alidou was on hand to poke home and continue his good form in front of goal.

Despite FC controlling the first-half for the most part, the UEFA Europa Conference League participants from Iceland were able to level. A strong run from Jason Dadi Svanthórsson saw him drive through the middle and find Kristinn Steindórsson, who chipped the oncoming Philipp Pentke.

Breidablik level late on

The second-half provided little in the way of action in the early stages. FC made four changes at the break as Luca Kilian, Meiko Wäschenbach, Damion Downs and Florian Dietz replaced Rasmus Carstensen, Jeff Chabot, Faride Alidou and Florian Kainz. Davie Selke came on in the 62nd minute and 13 minutes later, combined with another sub to restore FC’s lead.

Selke headed on for Downs, who produced a good half-volley finish from 12 yards to give FC the advantage once more. The Icelandic side didn’t give up, though. A quickly taken free-kick saw Aron Bjarnason cross to the back post for Benjamin Stokke to poke home with six minutes to go. That is also how the game ended.

FC are next in action on Sunday 31st March at 15:30 CEST. The first game after the international break sees Timo Schultz’s side take on FC Augsburg at the WWK Arena.
