SINGLE SUM UP
No doubt one of the better recognised, but lesser known U2 songs. Stay had its moment of fame used in the Wim Wenders follow up to Wings Of Desire. In the middle of U2's left field phase, the single is comprised of a lot of variety. Frank Sinatra (though aged), manages to duet with Bono well, even as Bono intermittently tries in comedic fashion to shine like Frankie does, not a match made in heaven, but a match. Better than Slow Dancing which is a lame attempt at balladry, at least this isn't the version had Willie Nelson on it. A couple of highlights from the Zoo TV tour (Love Is Blindness, and Bullet The Blue Sky). Capping off with the remix of Lemon by Morales. Not quite the peak of Morales's own producing but the idea to turn that song into a pretty ominous dark club song. You get quite the odd mix of music when you let U2 do what they want.

In the late eighties, U2 were on form and excelled at a number of different song styles. One such style was the moody song about love that could - and did - trick some people into thinking it was an actual love song while in fact exploring tensions and darker aspects of romance. The two most prominent examples, of course, are With Or Without You and All I Want Is You. In 1991, U2 dramatically expanded their stylistic palette on the patchy Achtung Baby album, but in a token gesture to fans who might've felt alienated by the new sounds, there was also One, hearking back to WOWY, AIWIY, et al. Only problem was, One is a dull and cliche song reflecting none of the greatness of its antecendents.

Then U2 put out Stay. It is a depressive return to form, resisting One's cliches and tugging emotionally at the listener. One of the more conventional songs from Zooropa, it is consequently the most well-known. While Zooropa may have a few better songs, this song deserves its popularity and it is a good choice as a single.

As far as the other tracks go, I've Got You Under My Skin is the realisation of Bono's dream to duet with Sinatra, but is unremarkable. Slow Dancing is a soft romantic track performed solely by Bono and Edge; the track had debuted live four years earlier but this was its first studio appearance. It later appears as a Pop-era b-side performed by the full band and butchered by Willie Nelson, hence the version on the Stay single is the one I prefer to play. The live tracks are strong and reflect two of the ZooTV Tour's best tracks, but are not actually representative of the heights either Bullet or Love Is Blindness actually reached. As for the Lemon remix, I could not care less.

I believe this one single turned me into an Old Blue Eyes fan. It bridged two generations of music and made me a musically well-rounded individual. I'm not knocking the tune "Stay," but the song is greatly overshadowed by Bono and Frank's rendition of the timeless classic "I've Got You Under My Skin." Am I allowed to say it changed my life? And all this from a supposed B-side.
