State of Play (2003) (BBC) (DVD)

Stephen Collins is an ambitious politician. Cal McAffrey is a well-respected investigative journalist and Stephen's ex-campaign manager. En route to work one morning, Stephen's research assistant mysteriously falls to her death on the London Underground. It's not long before revelations of their affair hit the headlines. Meanwhile a suspected teenage drug dealer is found shot dead. These (apparently unconnected) events expose a dangerous habit within modern government of dancing too closely with the corporate devil. Friendships are tested and lives are put on the line as an intricate web of lies unfolds.

One of the BBC's best, this six-part thriller wastes no time building intrigue. It begins like an entry in the fast-paced Bourne series with a foot chase through London, followed by two execution-style hits. Moments later, MP Stephen Collins (David Morrissey) finds out his research assistant, Sonia, was killed in an accident. Newspaper editor Cameron Foster (Bill Nighy) and reporters Della (Kelly Macdonald) and Cal (John Simm), Stephen's former campaign manager, intend to establish whether the events are related. When they realize he's following identical leads for a competing paper, Foster drafts his son, Dan (James McAvoy), to join their investigation. Before long, the team discovers Stephen was having an affair with Sonia. When the news becomes public, his wife, Ann (Polly Walker), leaves him. Then Della finds that the murder victim, a 15-year-old "bag snatcher" from the wrong side of the tracks, contacted Sonia the day she died. He swiped her briefcase, hoping for cash, but found incriminating photos instead--Sonia's death may not have been accidental. From that point forward, it's a free-for-all between the politicians, the press, the police, and big business. An ill-timed affair will complicate matters further.

State of Play embodies British television at its finest. It's also a particularly pulse-pounding portrayal of the journalistic life, a small-screen successor to fact-based films like All the Presidents Men and Zodiac--but with a lot more tea and biscuits. Writer Paul Abbott (Touching Evil) and director David Yates (The Girl in the Café) provide low-key commentary for the first episode, while Yates, producer Hilary Bevan Jones, and editor Mark Day contribute to the sixth. Like 1989 miniseries Traffik, the basis for Steven Soderbergh's award-winning movie, State of Play would later be adapted for the big screen by The Last King of Scotland's Kevin Macdonald. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

I am a Brit and love British tv programmes. Living in America is wonderful except that I don't especially like American tv productions. So, I turn to British stuff whenever possible. The actors in this production, Bill Night, John Simm, David Morrissey and the rest are all superb and many of them are BAFTA recipients with long and successful careers. The story is well crafted and the production values of the DVD are superb. I have watched it twice. Terrific value for money. You won't be disappointed. Cheers, all.

This is an absolute don't miss. The story is simple enough: a young woman working for a British M.P. chairing an energy committee is found dead in the Green Park tube stop. An accident or a murder? We later learn that the woman was having an affair with the M.P. We also learn that she may have been a plant from the PR firm representing a leading energy company. Perhaps the government itself has helped to engineer this, since they are hoping for a particular result from the energy committee. And the newspaper may be loathe to press too hard since they are seeking some government licenses. Enter the dogged reporters Cal McCaffrey, Della Smith, Helen Preger and Dan Foster, all being led by their editor, Cameron Foster, Dan's father. The structure suggests a remake of All the President's Men, with reporters as heroes and the newsroom as central set.

The difference is that this is newsroom noir, with endless threats, payoffs, secret recordings and reporters' tricks. The color palette is dark, the pacing is nonstop/riveting and the direction (by David Yates) and writing (by Paul Abbott) is nothing short of superb. The most dazzling element, however, is the acting, with key roles in an ensemble cast played by John Simm, Kelly Macdonald, Philip Glenister, David Morrissey, Deborah Findlay, Amelia Bullmore, Polly Walker, Marc Warren, James McAvoy, and Bill Nighy as Cameron Foster. Each of these actors is capable of carrying a film as lead actor. The cup simply overrunneth with talent.

There are 6 55-minute episodes. This is a prime candidate for binge watching or you could set it aside for a week's unparalleled enjoyment. Trust me on this, State of Play is top-notch entertainment.

As I write, the Press Lord of Great Britain and the United States, putting aside other nations in which his media disseminate their product, has just been testifying before a Parliamentary Committee on the illegal and unethical practices in which his media have admittedly engaged. It is not now a question of whether it was done but who knew about knew that it was being done and who ordered it to be done.
This extended BBC television drama is a tense exciting view of the interactions among powerful economic, political, communications and law enforcement elites. It is best viewed with an open mind, as a drama in which some guys (male and female) can be seen as Good, some as Evil, and, most, as some combination of the two. The acting is top-notch, ditto the script, ditto the direction, ditto the filming (cinematography). Depending on one's personal outlook one will sympathize with one or another individual character. It is to the credit of the creative staff that none comes out without being tarnished in some way, everyone fails to live up to the ideals of their roles. To what extent this fiction can be generalized beyond the specific case, as probably the writers desired, certainly, I could not say. My reading of the film is that it shows clearly that nobody comes to the table with clean hands regardless of their motives; I assume that is what the film was intended to show.
The film begins with a murder and adds another early on. I found the revelations with regard to the perpetrator (one who saw that these were done) to be almost entirely subordinated to other concerns. In fact, the murder seemed only to be a dramatic device to add punch, seasoning, to the central story. You may see otherwise. Regardless, the average viewer of law and order/press drama, should find this mini-series quite satisfying.

This political thriller is brilliantly plotted, deftly written, and perfectly cast. An attractive young political intern is hit by an Underground train and a petty thief is shot, execution-style, after placing a call to her cell phone. A political and police investigation begin, and there is slowly emerging evidence of a massive cover-up at very high levels. David Morissey stands out by far as conflicted politician Stephen Collins, whose dedication to his cause is undercut by his sliding personal ethics. John Simm has a nuanced performance as the investigative reporter Cal McCaffrey, who is Collins's best friend, former campaign manager, and--well, it's complicated. No spoilers here. The effervescent Kelly Macdonald, in a thankless role as grim, critical reporter sidekick/buddy Della Smith, nonetheless shines with the little material she's given. James MacAvoy, suitably winsome and with a boyish grin, charms as Dan Foster, the maverick freelance reporter with questionable methods, and BIll Nighy as the editor-in-chief of McCaffrey and Smith's newspaper is wickedly delightful, as only Bill Nighy can be. Marc Warren is perfectly slimy as a low-life manipulator; Polly Walker doesn't get to do much other than weep and look tormented as Stephen's wronged wife Anne; and Philip Glenister, as DCI William Bell, in charge of the criminal part of the investigation, shows flashes of the brilliance he brought to his role as DCI Gene Hunt in "Life on Mars." It's hard not to sit and watch all six episodes in one go.

I saw this, UK version, on BBC America, long before the Hollywood one came out. There is no comparing them. This one is so compelling, has such depth, complexity, and such rich character development. The ensemble cast just flows, and what a cast! The story, the plot is excellent. Unpredictable, at least then, probably still. And I still love watching it, many times. An all time favorite.

I was hooked on this series from the word go. A mixture of politics and journalism which works well in this case. Unfortunately. this is another where you feel you are being cheated by only having a limited number of episodes. This occurs especially when all the solutions are crammed into the last episode, which makes it rather overwhelming. However, that does not detract from the series - wellworth seeing and wellworth recommending..
An interesting side is the fact that the secondary personality of a Scottish fellow reporter, played by Kelly Macdonald, reappears as an Irish immigrant in the excellent US series, "Boardwalk Empire". She is certainly an actress to follow.

This mini-series was like a book you did not want to put down. You start wondering why it takes 6 hours to tell a story. At the end you are breathless.
It is like a satisfying meal which leaves you full, but wondering when you can return. My wife and I like to discuss what we have seen as we go through each episode to ensure that we did not miss anything, epecially with movies that contain Britspeak (I am English and have no problem with it, my Canadian wife sometime finds it difficult - pause on a DVD player is a great invention.)
There are several sub-plots within the story which periodically come together and then part again. In the end you are left very surprised where the story ends up. Though you were led there gently, not all of sudden presented with a solution where you ask "where did they get that from?"
Make this into just a 2 hour American movie - the resulting feelings should be totally different.
Watch it once to see the movie, then watch it again to get what you missed the first time. All performances were top notch. Like most British movies it tells a very good story without the flash effects which Hollywood has to substitute for quality.
