In the US, if congress proposes a bill and says it’s either for “the children” or “national security” the bill is most likely 🐂💩.

u/yr_boi_tuna avatar

The 9/11 Memorial Patriot Freedom Think of the Children Act

contains 4 trillion in subsidies for pharma companies

I'd like to add that most of the legislation under the guise of "safety" is really meant to control or monitor people.

It's not for our safety, it's legalized manipulation.

"Safety" as in "we can now safely spy on people without repercussions"

"We can now legally violate your rights. And you elected us and gave us power to do so."

Or even worse, they're not elected and in government agencies and put in "rules and regulations" that aren't laws, but they enforce them like laws anyways.

And also likely to pass unopposed because nobody wants to appear weak on national security or like they don’t care about the children.

u/DaBIGmeow888 avatar

Or they tie it with a must pass bill, just to bypass opposition.

Or when they write themselves out of it. See latest FISA vote, Obama Care…

I’m at the point where both of those are such massive red flags I am already wanting to nuke the idea and anything near it into oblivion.

Comments are still open, so please write to them that (officially).

That's insane. Any actual bad actors will just VPN and this will stop nothing.

All this is is more spying on the American people.

Controlling people is exactly the point.

Ding dong the correct answer is here.

1984 called. They want their mass surveillance back again.

u/Informal_Bunch_2737 avatar

1984 called. They're jealous and want to take notes.

1984 only had a may-or-may-not-be-monitored panopticon iirc, with modern tech a meticulous AI curated and indexed record of everything everyone ever does is possible

Well you will need to verify yourself for VPNs as well

It's a solid plan /s

u/DaBIGmeow888 avatar

They love to spy on their own citizens.

Cloud service users will need to verifiy themself for "safety" reasons and to reduce "terrorism".

So my Mega.nz account will be ok

But uhh that was always the case with Aws and co?

Sounds absolutely insane. I doubt this will actually happen tho.

u/LZ129Hindenburg avatar

Let's hope not...this sounds far worse than the "block pirate sites" bill that's going around...

If they could do that for porn they could do that for any site that has "risks". They'll use morality and security to claim anything. Cccp model

They can't force foreign companies to comply.

Banning access is possible. In my country tons of sites and apps aren't accessible. They have single gateway to monitor traffic in and out and they can order isp to give them info on anything. But they didn't try hard enough so simply changing dns and use vpn is enough

I'd take this bill as soon as it includes the off shore banks congress uses to skirt laws with much harsher sentences than what we use these boxes to trade 1s and 0s with each other carry Fuck them all for going after this boogie man when there's so much good they have the power to do

u/LZ129Hindenburg avatar

Yup that's never gonna fucking happen. This is a plutocracy and we all know it.

I feel like this is also a financial privacy issue because you can't generally obtain cloud services without paying. I should be able to pay anonymously for vpns and web hosting.

You actually can, but now they are going after anonymous crypto exchanges too.

so many posts about the US trying to de-privatize (if thats a word, im not a english major for a reason) people on the internet. shame on the US for that.

u/Stars_And_Garters avatar

De-privatize is used but almost exclusively as a private business made public. So in the UK, they have de-privatized health care with the NHS and conservatives are trying to privatize it.

I can't think of a correct-sounding single word to say "To revoke the privacy of". I would probably have said "So many posts about anti-privacy in the US" or something like that.

Yeah that’s the issue I was having, de-privatize doesn’t sound right but that’s the only thing I could think of

u/pxlfck avatar

deanonymize.

Land of the free

I'm just playing, baby, this the land of the free Where you can get a Glock and a gram for the cheap Where you can live your dreams long as you don't look like me Be a puppet on a string, hanging from a fucking tree

u/DaBIGmeow888 avatar

Because at least China isn't spying on you, your friendly US govt gets all your gravy and porn list secrets.

Land of the fucking dinosaurs. So many people want these skeletons the fuck out of congress.

“This definition would capture services such as content delivery networks, proxy services, and domain name resolution services,” the proposal reads.

The proposed rule, National Emergency with Respect to Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities, will stop accepting comments from interested parties on April 30, 2024.

u/TannhauserTears avatar

What does this mean I'm struggling to understand

Gets rid of what’s left of anonymity for regular internet users while doing absolutely nothing to anyone tech savvy enough to care about anonymity which includes the “bad actors” this bill claims to target. It’s more post 9/11 spy on our citizens bullshit just adapted to a more digital world.
