Why I've Always Liked This One

I know Star Trek 5 is not a favorite of Star Trek fans, but I have always liked this one. The number one reason being the close camaraderie between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, and this movie takes this to a deeper level. I also love the Yosemite Park scenes and seeing El Capitan is a real treat.
Beyond that, this movie reminds me an old science fiction story from decades ago that is perfectly out-pictured in this movie. It was about a civilization who destroyed themselves through the complete abuse of power. What survived on their now-desolate planet was a conglomerate consciousness of the destroyed population. This was comprised of the totality of the population’s ego, carnal mind, and selfish human consciousness. It is what some have referred to as the dweller on the threshold, and on a planetary scale as opposed to that individual darkness we all must contend with in ourselves. It has complete awareness of itself and always wants to be a god, but is based on ego or fallen consciousness if you will. This for example, as opposed to a Christ Consciousness.
In the movie, if we take away the harmonious music and beautiful sky of Sha-Ka-Ree, we see a very ugly and desolate planet inhabited by such a planetary dweller who wants to be worshipped as Almighty God. But when Kirk rightfully puts forth a reasonable question, the evil dweller reveals itself, because corrupt abuse of power does not like being questioned, and there we are.
I love the ending where Kirk suggests that God is within the human heart. In other words, don’t look outside of ourselves to find God or to connect with that Christ Consciousness as it is within us. Imagine this on a planetary scale! Again, this movie reminds me of that old science fiction story and I always enjoy this movie every time I watch it.

I know that this one is frowned upon by Trekkies, BUT I thought it was much better than what many others thought of it. I love how it started with friends vacationing together. I also loved the lesson about con men emotionally manipulating others. The Enterprise goes in search of God. How awesome is that! It had a lot of great lessons and themes. Then again, my tastes have been different than mainstream taste.

I understand why people dislike this film, especially when viewed as part of the movie series. That said, it does at least FEEL like Star Trek when you watch it. I tried to like the Kelvin timeline material, and I did enjoy Star Trek 2009 when I watched it the first time, but one glaring difference between Kelvin and Prime timelines is repeat viewing.

I can't rewatch anything J.J. Abrams did, and like it. That includes his Star Wars movies. His media almost feels designed to stun you into liking it upon first viewing, but almost immediately upon rewatching, the holes start to show.
I agree Star Trek V is the weakest of the original movies, with IV being very close behind it, but even so, I can enjoy it to this day.
I just can't say the same for any new Trek
And bty, for people that complain that Serak would scorn is son for being, "So human" upon Spock's birth, it does help to explain why Spock tries so hard to suppress his humanity. It's been made obvious that Spock has father/son issues, not least of which, being part human, in light of some of Serak's comments and his general attitude toward human beings.
Either that, or perhaps Spock's mother is just an annoying representation of them. Who knows, but I better not give Bad Robot any script ideas, or one day, we'll see a series about how badly she suffered as Serak's wife, inside the evil Vulcan patriarchy. I so hope we get to see Spock undergo gender reasignment, and start a love triangle with Kirk and Bones. I suppose there's always Star Trek Discovery.
Anyway, in light of the new material, I find even IV and V to both be welcome in my digital library, and I am glad they are still available.

Ich weiß nicht, warum der Film in den Kritiken immer so verrissen wird. Ich bin der Meinung, dass Star Trek 5 - Am Rande des Universums sehr spannend, aber auch sehr emotional (wie eigentlich alle ungeraden Teile der Star Trek-Kinoreihe) eine sehr interessante wie alte philosophische Frage aufgreift: "Wer sind wir und woher kommen wir?" Und Gott im Zentrum "des Universums" zu suchen erscheint dabei auch nicht unlogisch, schließlich liegt hier der Ursprung des Urknalls und damit evtl. auch die Wiege der Menschheit. Wissen wir's besser?

Sicherlich wirkt der Film von Zeit zu Zeit unfreiwillig komisch, aber gerade Szenarien wie das gemeinsam Campen der Hauptfiguren ("Roll roll roll your boat...", eine herrliche Szene) oder Kirks Aussage: "Ich wusste, dass ich nicht sterben werde, weil ich nicht allein und Ihr bei mir wart." geben dem Film eine emotionale Tiefe und Lebendigkeit. Und letztendlich führt uns Sybok, alias Laurence Luckinbill, in einer sehr beeindruckenden schauspielerischen Darbietung in die Vergangenheit unserer Helden zurück.

Am Ende deckt die beharrliche Frage: "Wozu braucht Gott ein Raumschiff?" die wahre Natur des vermeintlichen Gottes auf, einfach grandios.

Zu dem beeindruckt der Film mit einem ergreifenden Soundtrack aus der Feder von Altmeister Jerry Goldsmith, der für sich allein schon sehr hörenswert ist!

Technisch gesehen ist das Blu-ray-Remake des Films eine echte Augenweide und in Bild- und Tonbrillanz nicht zu toppen, einfach Klasse und sehenswert! Und auch hier sei darauf hingewiesen, dass dieser UK-Import alle möglichen und insbes. natürlich auch eine deutsche Tonspur mitbringt! Also keine Angst beim Kauf!

Ich zähle den Film zu meinen Must-haves und vergebe daher 5 Sterne mit ausdrücklicher Empfehlung!

Why are people putting this movie down??
When I got this movie, I found it deals with issues that we all can relate to in our own personal life.
I watched it 5 times that week trying to analyse those moments. Each time I watched the movie, I got a better understanding and better appreciation of what it contained.
It's altogether different from other Star Trek movies. Maybe thats what it is - different!
It talks about the pain we experience in our own personal lives and how to face it through good times and bad.
It talks about our religious beliefs.
Most of all, it involves friendship.
Here we see Kirk, Spock and McCoy spending time in a campout together, enjoying there time as friends; sharing some humourous moments. Something we don't see too much of in other Star Trek episodes.
After all they have gone through, all those years in their missions, their friendship held them together.
We see them in a different perspective away from the usual on-board-the-starship- routine of captain, officer and crew.
Maybe Paramount made budget cuts in the movie, and maybe because William Shatner directed this movie, that people are complaining, but I find this movie is entertaining and enjoyable. William Shatner did a pretty good job of bringing out a part of the movie we didn't expect to see.
The human side of the characters involved, especially Spock, who has come to realize who his real friends and family,are.
I would recommend this movie and add to your collection - I have!
