Compiled from Woody Allen's legendary standup routines of the mid 1960s, Standup Comic is an absolute necessity for any acolyte of the man's solid work from his Casino Royale and New Yorker phase.
"Here's a good example of oral contraception. I asked a girl to go to bed with me, and she said 'No.'"
Between a youthful stint as a TV gag man and his groundbreaking films of the 1970s, Allen tried his hand at standup. He was, predictably, a success. Taken from nightclub dates in 1964, '65, and '68, Standup Comic shows how stylistically similar he was to contemporaries like Bill Cosby but also how his absurd flights of imagination made him utterly unique.
"I took a puff of the wrong cigarette at a fraternity dance once. The cops had to come and get me. I broke two teeth trying to give a hickey to the Statue of Liberty."
Now that he's a junior-varsity Ingmar Bergman, it's easy to forget that Allen's first public face was that of a world-class zhlub--a rumpled redhead who shared stories of analysis, sexual frustration, and failure. The long-form tales featured on Standup Comic (including Allen's famous bit featuring a moose) provide plenty of laughs as well as an early glimpse at this protean comic genius. --Mike Gerber

I was just beginning my stand-up comedy career when I purchased this CD. Truth be told, it almost discouraged me from continuing. Why? Because Woody Allen uses words to such perfection and because he has more "laugh lines" on the first track than I ever got in an entire set.
For me, the first three tracks of the 1968 performance are the hook. As a joke writer myself, I have no idea how he could have come up with the premises. It’s the most brilliant stand-up I have ever heard.
The 1965 show was only moderately funny. It was a bad recording and contained too many over-the-top scenarios like the moose at the costume party. But "Unhappy Childhood" and "European Trip" are standout tracks.
I thought that the 1964 performance was the freshest sounding of the three. The audience seemed very close to the mic and they loved him. The first track "Private Life" was brilliant. Most of the other tracks are excellent, too--especially “Brooklyn”, “My Grandfather" and "N.Y.U."
As you listen, take note of how many brilliant SENTENCES there are--never mind jokes. The punchline of the joke about the dog from the damaged pet shop is so damn brilliant-- yet no one had ever said it before Woody.
I don't let Woody's controversial private life cloud my judgment of his comedy. Woody Allen was a brilliant stand-up. He could have become a very wealthy man if he remained a stand-up. Instead, he let us into his clever mind through film instead.
There are some great comedians today. In my opinion, Louis CK is the best. But no modern comedian could pull off what Woody Allen does on this CD. The sheer volume of jokes coupled with his delivery nuances are impossible to duplicate.
This CD is very hard to find now. Rhino Entertainment took ownership of the recording in 1999. Try buying it used on Amazon.com.
At times somewhat dated with references from 1960's politics and society, there are still enough routines which will be very funny by listeners of all generations ("Mechanical Objects"; "The Moose", to name a few). This comedy CD will be enjoyed by all, and is even funner the second time around.

If you only buy one Woody Allen CD buy this one.
This cd is brilliant and the humour on it from Mr Allen which over 40 odd years later is still funny and fresh today.
