My wife and I moved to the Tampa area three years ago and have been wanting to visit St. Petersburg. I talked her into a Sunday trip to the Dalí Museum. I had checked out memberships online but decided to wait until we arrived at the museum because I had a couple of questions. So here’s the review.

Let’s start out with the bad. We rolled into the parking lot and were told to drive farther down to the covered area. I’m a 100% Total and Permanent Disabled American Veteran with license plates. Yet we were charged $10 for parking. Had I purchased the membership, parking would have been free regardless of ADA status. Next, my wife got her purse patted down on entry and she uses a walker but they just asked if she had anything in the walker. Feeling that her selfie stick wasn’t an issue she claimed no. Well once in the museum when she went to use it she was stopped by security. He radioed his boss asking if she could just put it away in her walker but bossman said no and to have her take it to one of the free lockers. I was gallant and took the offending stick outside to the bank of lockers but realized, hey I’m not that far from the car so I took it there. So a couple of things to remember about parking and selfie sticks.

I purchased a North American Reciprocal Museum (NARM) membership which gets us access to other NARM museums throughout the states as well as Dali museum access for my wife and I and up to five children under the age of 18. All of this for $165 a year. There are other levels for purchase so check out their website or inquire at the museum.

One thing they had for fun were Dali mustaches at the information booth. These are simply black pipe cleaners but you can fashion it into a fun Daliesque mustache to wear around the galleries.

Next we moved to the Dali Wing where his art is displayed. I knew Dali was a Surrealist but the amount of detail in the paintings was amazing. There were paintings of all sizes and of differing aspects based on the time of his career.

Next was the special exhibit of Dali and the Impressionists. This gallery had works by Monet, Cezanne and other well known impressionists. One thing I didn’t know was that Dali began his painting career doing impressionist work and his pieces were also displayed.

Next it was onto the Cafe Gala (Named for his wife) with its traditional Spanish fare. I’ll review the cafe separately. Lastly we visited the Shop were you can buy several items including prints, shirts, jewelry, books and more. Keep in mind members get 10% off of the Cafe and 15% at the store.

The Museum is located on a great piece of property and the building itself is a work of art. I think you’ll enjoy your visit as much as my wife and I did.

Very well maintained botanical gardens. Relaxing stroll through the tropical flora. On the way you see flamingos strolling in the pond and caged exotic birds. Peaceful and shaded. The history of this 120 year old property is quiet fascinating describing the founding family, their economic ups and downs, the Florida attraction site, and the required upkeep. Worth the visit, reasonable entrance fee and expect too spend just over an hour strolling these gardens.

Sought out the Duncan McClellan Gallery in the warehouse district of St. Petersburgh, which is definitely off the beaten track. Do not be put off by the area as the visit is well worth it. This is a large gallery of several rooms and a walking garden, all filled with the most beautiful and unusual glass art....vases, plates, free-forms, animals, sculptures, and more. The gallery also has several glass working furnaces in its large work area and offers frequent demonstrations. This is a unique gallery with works from artists from the US and beyond. Don't miss it!!

Our trip to the Chihuly Collection was a highlight of spring break beach trip. While the collection isn’t huge, it is absolutely breathtaking. Combined with the fascinating video and mesmerizing glass-blowing demonstration at the Morean Glass Studio across the street (included in the ticket price), it was a wonderful morning of art at a very affordable price compared to other museums.

A lot of people told us to lower our expectations when planning to catch a Rays game, but I was pleasantly surprised. I know the ballpark is older and outdated, but that does not mean it was falling apart, dirty, etc. I actually enjoyed the Air conditioning while watching a ballgame. I'm a Braves fan, and sitting outside in Atlanta can be brutal. I would go back to this park again if I'm in the area before the new park is built.

The Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida, is as impressive on the outside from an architectural perspective as it is on the inside with a collection covering almost 5,000 years of civilization. Located at 255 Beach Drive Northeast, across the street from the new St. Pete Pier, the museum showcases thousands of objects extending from antiquity to present, to fascinating travel exhibitions, to exciting events in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg's scenic waterfront. Open from 10 to 5 Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 on Sunday, the Museum of Fine Arts features the only comprehensive art collection of its kind on Florida's west coast, including masterpieces from Monet, O'Keeffe, De Kooning, Wiley, Morisot, Rodin and Steichen. Also see African art, European paintings, American photography, even ancient Greek and Roman art. Take a guided tour and purchase the MFA handbook, a beautifully bound book, published by Rizzoli, which highlights more than 200 works of art from all areas of the permanent collection. Founded by Margaret Acheson Stuart, the museum was opened to the public in 1965, the first art museum in St. Petersburg located on the downtown waterfront. Did you notice the Bombax tree on the south lawn that was only three feet tall when it was planted after the museum opened? Currently on view are stunning exhibitions by noted photographer Tom Jones, Japanese woodblock prints and Japanese photographs from the Meiji Era from 1870 to 1900 and Dogs in Art. Jones' Here We Stand" exhibit includes more than 100 works spanning from 1998 to 2021, including his critical assessment of the romanticized representation of Native Americans in photography that re-examines historic pictures taken by white photographers. The "Lasting Impressions" exhibit features 60 Japanese woodblock prints from famous Kabuki theater actors in the 18th century to vibrant landscapes in the 19th century.

My wife and I spent two or three hours here exploring the boardwalks, trails and observation platform. The parking lot was almost completely full when we arrived but once we started on the trails, we saw just a few people spread out over our walk. We found the area to be very peaceful and the walks to be enjoyable. We saw a few birds and fish and otherwise enjoyed the greenery and views from the observation platform. The visitor center exhibits and information signs along the trails are all quite helpful in understanding the ecosystem and definitely contributed to our visit. While it was quite close to our hotel in St Petersburg, it felt very far away and made for a relaxing couple of hours of fresh air. We recommend.

Rapidly growing city that is absolutely beautiful. It's relatively small, so getting around doesn't take much walking. Unfortunately, that means that downtown streets can become highly congested during peak hours, so finding parking can be difficult.
