Saints Fall in Back-to-Back Pitchers' Duels at Rochester

The St. Lawrence University softball team fell in two pitchers' duels Monday afternoon, as they dropped two games, 2-0 and 3-0 at the hands of the Yellowjackets at Southside Field.

The shutouts are just their second and third times being blanked in 23 games played this season. It brings their conference record to 2-4, and their overall regular season record to 14-9. Rochester continues a strong season – they are now 5-1 in conference play, and remain undefeated at home with a record of 10-0.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 0, Rochester 2

The Yellowjackets spent most of the game in the lead, but their scoring all came from early stages of the game. Rochester got on the board first in the first game of the day, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

In the second inning, the Yellowjackets put two runners in scoring position with one out after an error. That brought up Riley Laygo who drove a ball to center field on the first pitch she saw, bringing one unearned run in and the score was 2-0. The damage was limited, however, as Emily Siansky caught a runner stealing to get two down, and starting pitcher Izzy Melanson won a battle on a long at-bat to get the third out.

The Saints had their most threatening moments come in the final two innings. Maeve Thompson led off the top of the sixth with a single to right center, but Vivian Johnson then grounded into a 1-6-3 double play to end the threat.

In the seventh, down to their last three outs with the score still at 3-0, the Saints led off with an infield knock from Meredith Rose. Melanson then popped one up to the pitcher, Rose was put out on a fielder's choice and Stella VanGee grounded out to end the game.

Despite being saddled with the loss, Izzy Melanson rebounded with a strong outing in the opening game. In six complete innings, she allowed six hits, one earned run and only walked one. Molly Broccolo was strong for the Yellowjackets, not allowing any runs or walks while scattering five Saints hits over her seven innings thrown.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 0, Rochester 3

Rochester ran back their early offensive production in the second game of the twin bill. After Loren Castilloux doubled, she moved over to third on a groundout then scored on a wild pitch to give Rochester a 1-0 lead in the first.

The Saints were then stymied at the plate for the majority of the contest by Rochester starting pitcher Lauren Keys. They were hitless until Allison Kloft solved the puzzle with a knock in the top of the fourth. Zola Braswell also added one in the sixth, but that was all offensively for the Scarlet and Brown.

Keys left the game after the sixth with six strikeouts, no walks, no runs and just two hits. Sofia Berryhill had a valiant effort on the mound for the Scarlet and Brown, tossing her third consecutive complete game. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Next up:

The Saints return to non-conference action Wednesday afternoon, as they head back out on the road to face SUNY Potsdam in a road doubleheader. First pitches are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
