  • Students with Accommodations

St. John the Baptist DHS does have a program for students that have an IESP or 504 Accommodation plan.  However, as a private Catholic School, we are limited in the accommodations and/or modifications within our school program.  New York State Department of Education stipulates:

Education Law section 3602-c establishes requirements relating to the provision of special education to students with disabilities enrolled in nonpublic school by their parents. As a private institution, St. John the Baptist DHS does not provide any of these services. However, under the provisions of section 3602-c,students with disabilities placed by their parents in nonpublic school are entitled to receive special education services in accordance with an individual education service program (IESP) from the public school district in which the nonpublic school is located (West Islip) while they receive general education from the nonpublic school. Parents must request special education services, in writing, to the West Islip school district by June 1st preceding the school year for which the request for services is made.

Please review the following program modifications that we are able to accommodate:

    1. Resource Room services, if programmed in the student’s IESP, must be limited to one (40) minute period of Resource Room services per day.
    2. The IESP/504 must not limit the student’s ability to obey school rules and complete all course requirements without any modifications.  This includes homework modifications.
    3. Extended Testing Time accommodations – 1.5x or 2.0x.  Students will begin the test in the classroom and if additional time is needed, will be completed in the testing center.  Students receiving testing accommodations that specify questions read will take the entire exam in the Testing Center.
    4. Students in need of preferential seating should self-advocate for this accommodation with their teachers.
    5. Teachers cannot supply students with a copy of class notes.  Every effort will be made to connect the student with a classmate to assist in proper note-taking.
    6. As part of the natural instruction within the classroom, all students are checked for understanding. Special program modifications indicating ‘clarification and understanding’ cannot be accommodated.
