Alice S. Hassell OBITUARY

Alice Shirley Hassell, 91, of Ballston Spa passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2024, surrounded by her family’s love. Alice was born in the hospital on Court Street in Ballston Spa, NY on July 26, 1932, to George and Charlotte (Taylor) Lewis. She graduated from Ballston Spa High School in 1950. She attended Albany Business College and worked as a secretary at General Electric. She met the love of her life, Marvin Leroy Hassell, in March 1955 when her mother insisted that she ‘help that young man’ get his car out of the mud. They had their first date in May, and were inseparable thereafter. They were married on October 8, 1955, and she became not just his wife, but a Navy wife, spending the next fifteen years moving from New York to Connecticut, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Illinois, finally settling back in Ballston Spa when her ‘Honey’ retired in 1970.Her children and grandchildren had an excellent role model in her and were raised surrounded by family and love and affection. Family was the most important thing to Alice, and she was fortunate that all of her family lived nearby and stayed involved in her life and care. Independence, thrift, generosity to family, and yes, stubbornness, were also her hallmarks. She kept her family and the local cats and wildlife well fed, and there was never a meal without a homemade dessert. Her pies (especially apple, blueberry, rhubarb, chocolate and custard) will be remembered and sorely missed by all.Alice is survived by her son, David (Ann) Hassell; daughter Debbie (Benny) Zlotnick; granddaughters Sarah (Chris) McMahon and Kate (Joseph) Fryer; grandson Benjamin (Erica) Winslow, four great-grandchildren Ezekiel and Cecilia Fryer and Elliott and Oliver Winslow; and nephew Bill Lewis and his daughters Lindsay and Taylor, all of Ballston Spa. In addition to her parents, Alice was predeceased by her husband Marvin Hassell, brother Myron Lewis and her nephew Michael Lewis and her beloved uncle and aunt, Frank and Olive Boyce. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all the staff at 3 Springs, Wesley Community for their incredibly compassionate care of our mother.Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Friday, March 29 from 6pm to 8pm at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East Hich Street, Ballston Spa. Funeral services will be held 10am Saturday, March 30 at Christ Episcopal Church, 15 W. High Street, Ballston Spa. Burial will follow in Ballston Spa Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Alice’s name to Christ Episcopal Church Food Pantry or any food pantry of your choice.Online remembrances may be made at www.armerfuneralhome.com
