Hebbal Flyover To Undergo Upgrade, Traffic Diversions Announced

Introduction

Hebbal Flyover to Get Infrastructure Upgrade

The Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) has embarked on an infrastructure project to improve traffic flow in the city. The project involves adding two new lanes to the heavily congested Hebbal flyover, a crucial traffic junction in North Bengaluru. To facilitate construction, traffic diversions will be in place for the next six months, starting from April 17, 2024.

Traffic Diversions Announced for Smooth Flow During Construction

The traffic diversions announced by the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) aim to minimise congestion during construction. Here's a breakdown of the key changes:

  • KR Puram Ramp Closure and Diversions

A key aspect of the project is the dismantling of two spans of the existing KR Puram up ramp, where it joins the main flyover lane. This necessitates the closure of the KR Puram ramp to all vehicular traffic except for two-wheelers.

The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) has devised diversions to manage traffic flow during construction. Commuters travelling from Nagavara on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) towards the city via Mekhri Circle are advised to take the following route:

    • Proceed to Hebbal Circle below the flyover.
    • Take a right turn towards Kodigehalli.
    • Make a U-turn to join the service road.
    • Finally, merge onto the loop towards Bengaluru city.
  • Alternate Routes for Commuters: Commuters travelling from different areas will need to use designated alternate routes:

    • Nagavara (ORR) to City: Take Hebbal circle below the flyover, turn right towards Kodigehalli, make a U-turn, and join the service road to access the loop towards the city.
    • KR Puram to City: Utilise alternative routes like the IOC-Mukunda Theatre Road, Lingarajapuram flyover route, or Nagavara-Tannery Road.
    • Hegdenagar-Thanisandra to City: Commuters travelling from Hegde Nagar-Thanisandra can use the GKVK-Jakkur Road to enter the city.
    • KR Puram to Yeshwantpur: KR Puram commuters headed towards Yeshwantpur can proceed below the flyover towards BEL Circle. Take a left turn at BEL Circle to reach Sadashivanagar Police Station junction. Take a right turn from here to proceed towards IISc and onward to Yeshwantpur.
    • KR Puram Area to Kempegowda International Airport (KIAL): Commuters travelling to Kempegowda International Airport (KIAL) from KR Puram, Hennur, HRBR Layout, Banaswadi, KG Halli, and surrounding areas are advised to use the Hennur-Bagalur Road.

Expected Impact and Relief Measures

While the first day of diversions saw minimal congestion, the BTP anticipates a heavier impact during weekdays. They have deployed additional traffic police personnel to ensure smoother traffic flow. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and consider using alternate routes or public transportation during peak hours.

This infrastructure upgrade project by the BDA highlights the ongoing efforts to improve Bengaluru's road infrastructure and enhance traffic management within the city. The additional lanes on the Hebbal flyover are expected to significantly improve traffic flow and connectivity in the long run.
