      Critics Consensus

Jake Gyllenhaal delivers an impressively committed performance, but Southpaw beats it down with a dispiriting drama that pummels viewers with genre clichés.

Max Weiss Baltimore Magazine About as subtle as a right uppercut to the jaw, Southpaw is nonetheless a welcome addition to the boxing melodrama genre. Rated: 3/4 Jun 12, 2016 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Gyllenhaal brings every ounce of his physical self to the role, but rippling muscles and a mashed-up face don't really constitute a performance. It's not quite his fault that Billy is such a maddening character. Rated: 2/5 Aug 19, 2015 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker The modicum of pleasure delivered by "Southpaw" arrives thanks to its cast, who struggle bravely and energetically with the hopelessly bland text and the invisible, impersonal direction. Jul 29, 2015 Full Review Denise Pieniazek A Sala Llena (Argentina) Southpaw uses the world of boxing as an excuse to talk about different adversities in life, especially around emotional ties. Therefore each fight and each blow contains a meaning in itself, and with each of them the boxer will give a part of his life. Rated: 8/10 Jan 14, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The entire film hinges on Gyllenhaal, because everything else onscreen adopts the worn-out blueprints of every boxing film you've ever seen. Rated: 2/4 Jun 9, 2022 Full Review Kip Mooney Central Track Can't punch its way out of the ring of boxing movie cliches. Rated: C- Aug 10, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Dan R Jake Gyllenhaal has such a wide range in the acting world combine that with this great boxing storyline and it becomes something gripping and emotionally attaching, love it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/08/24 Full Review prawnda s i think this film could be significantly better with better camera direction. too many of the fight scenes are too close up and hectic, and while that might accurately depict the experience of the fighter, it doesn't make for the best or most cohesive cinematic experience. the story beats are solid enough, but it just feels like the fighting that should be the main focus of the story is too blurred and erratic. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Randy Z All I can say is wow! At times i totally forgot that it was Jake Gyllenhaal. He completely transformed himself. The fight scenes were so authentic, during the final fight I literally got up out my chair and was shouting at the screen. What a performance by everyone really. As far as sports dramas go, it was excellent. Jake did an amazing job re-making his body into a fighting, killing machine. Also his character was bang on perfect. Great story line as well. If you're a Jake Gyllenhaal fan, you will absolutely love this film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review C G As Mick LaSalle writes in his review, this is a movie about grief and human emotions. Boxing is the stage but humanity is the subject. Really gripping and moving. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Amanda P This is the most cheap story telling. Terrible movie, I traumatized myself through half the movie then had to turn it off. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review lucas o Engaging, exciting, but very ćliche, An enjoyable movie for all Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
