An extraordinary film. Brilliantly acted, and filmed, it's atmospheric, and mysterious, and plays it cards close to the vest. I think the main reason for a lot of the bad reviews is a dislike of an ending that feels like a letdown. It's actually a brilliant and perfect ending and a gut punch, but, like every other Marling/Batmanglij piece, you have to let go of expectations, let the film absorb you, and be comfortable with ambiguity and paradox.

Everything Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij collaborate on turns to experimental though entrancing and accessible gold. The theme of time travel and the cultish exploration of time travel seem to be the zoomed focus of The OA as much as Sound Of My Voice.. and I just want more.

A couple of documentary filmmakers infiltrate a secret cult with a hidden camera in order to expose the group and their leader who claims to be from the future. Really interesting and engaging story makes you forget the low budget. Not that it looks bad or anything, but it's mostly filmed in one main location which works for the claustrophobic feeling of being held in the throes of the cult. I enjoyed this one.

As with much of Marlings work, audiences can read all the plot points of the movie in more than one way, which only adds to the hypnotic, beguiling quality of the story. But, as with many of lifes questions, the mystery might be an answer unto itself.
