Good quality, nice sound.

It's been four years since En Vogue graced the music scene with their much under-rated album "Masterpiece Theatre", and since then they have been through a series of ups and downs despite being one of the leading female R&B groups of the nineties. But despite everything that has happened in the last four years, En Vogue are finally back with their highly anticipated release "Soul Flower" - this time comprising of original members Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron together with new member Rhona Bennet.
Although "Soul Flower" is a generally good album, you may be disappointed to find that it lacks the attention-grabbing material such as their earlier hits "Don't Let Go (Love)", "Hold On", "My Lovin' (Never Gonna Get It)" and "Free Your Mind" etc... However that is not to say that the album does not have its highlights. The buzz single "Losin' My Mind" adopts a rather unusual fanfare influence, which works surprisingly well with Rhona's dynamic vocals and the lead single "Ooh Boy" offers a funky disco-style groove.
Other highlights include the fantastic Neptunes-style "Heaven", the heart-warming "New Day Callin'" and the stunning "Million Different Ways". Of course, no En Vogue album would be complete without those traditional ballads: "Dissed Him" adds a nice twenty-first century touch to the usual 'I can't live without my man' topic, and "I Do Love You (Piece Of My Love)" is an excellent example of En Vogue's excellent vocal talents.
Frankly though, this really isn't the best En Vogue record to-date. It lacks the diversity of their multi-platinum sophomore disc "Funky Divas". It lacks the production quality of 1997's "EV3". It also lacks the vocal gymnastics of "Masterpiece Theatre". However it would be difficult for anyone to deny the vocal talents of this premier vocal group. To be perfectly honest, no-one is really expecting this album to become a huge runaway success. "Soul Flower" is simply an introduction to the newly evolved En Vogue, who will always remain as one of music's greatest success stories.

After a long absence and a myriad of greatest hits collections, the group that kept soul alive in the 90s is back with a different direction and a different line-up of members. En Vogue, past decade?s Destiny?s Child for the music-illiterate, are still a trio, with less Funky Divas, more EV3 with a neo-soul edge. Soul Flower is En Vogue?s attempt to find a niche in the ever-growing vintage soul market, since their previous releases, including Masterpiece Theatre, which bombed with the hubby-baiting semi-hit ?Riddle,? have been declining in success.
During those years, En Vogue also managed to lose a member to band-fragments super-group Lucy Pearl, turn into a trio, lose another member and then employ a new one who appears for the first time on this album. So, basically, you only have half on the original En Vogue on this record.
Their voices are still as strong as ever as demonstrated by ?Losin? My Mind? and ?Million Different Ways,? yet the sassiness is not as evident on this album as it was previously. The closest they come is in the malicious ?All You See? and a highlighting track ?Dissed Him.?
The album from there on meanders somewhere under mediocre. ?Ooh Boy? manages to capture a mild victory, but the rest of Soul Flower is just filler. From ?Stop? on down to ?New Day Callin?,? it makes one wonder if En Vogue still have what it takes to stay in such an industry as showbiz.
Songs range from the forgettable ?Heaven? to the awkwardly annoying ?Ez-a-lee,? making this album devoid of anything close to the hot ?Free Your Mind? or the sassy ?My Lovin? (You?re Never Gonna Get It).?
The new direction is lacking in luster. En Vogue should stick to delivering high-octane diva tunes, a niche with an unsatisfied audience. Although they have a beautiful range and strong vocals, it comes as a surprise that the whole band combined has less of a range than Mariah Carey. But, then again, Mariah is a legend unlike any other.
Soul Flower is strictly for fans and should be avoided by the general music fan-base.

It's been 4 years since En Vogue last graced us with an album and they have not let us down by any means. Now consisting of original members Cindy Herron & Terry Ellis and new girl Rhona Bennett the ladies have gone for a more subtle affair this time round. Starting off with horns and their harmonies which we know and love on 'Losin My Mind' to the poppy yet soulful message of 'New Day Callin' the songs on SoulFlower are pleasant and funky with a mixture of styles as you would come to expect from these talented ladies.
My only one letdown, is that I was a little disappointed that their powerhouse vocals were not used to their full effect, but maybe that is what they were aiming for showing that they can do subtle as well as power and not sound like everyone else out there right now.
A welcome return for these original funky divas, you have been sorely missed.

One of my favorite groups of all time. This is the only album not available on streaming services. I've had it once before, now I have it again. "A million different ways to say I love you."

4.0 out of 5 stars Good!

Soulflower is a combination of Neo Soul, 1970s Soul and Their faithful producers production. This project includes Cindy Terry and then New and now current member Rhona bennett. The group doesn't try to duplicate on here what they done on Born To Sing, Funky Diva, EV3, Masterpiece Theater and The Gift Of Christmas. But in it's own way, it's still good! They expand more musically on here this can be good for both En Vogue fans and 1970s Soul fans alike.

3.0 out of 5 stars What Is It About Contemporary R&B?
Reviewed in the United States on 6 March 2010
En Vogue were probably one of the first musical acts that I really paid a lot of attention to next to Toni Toni Tone. Now over the years I've heard every put down about them that one could hear. It goes from the constanct nitpicking on the twists and turns within the groups personel to the fact they were a "manufactured band assembled in the studio". True as that may be the commentary on them as a studio creation was, honestly a huge clishe' of the 90's and said nothing about what the grouo COULD do creatively. Interestingly enough all these same questions seemed to raise themselves in an honest way just by listening to the music on this album. Very much as with TLC the band had been around over a decade by this point and with this had only released half that many albums in that time. And as much as En Vogue's hip-soul/soul funk sound had kept them "funky divas" for a long time the conditions for what that meant had changed. By the time this album came out R&B girl groups, even recent ones such as Destiny's Child were kind of on the wane as solo "divas" were taking presidents. With the very talent Terry Ellis still in the fold on writing and production this would seem, from the cover art and presentation to be an album that is very funk informed:their true colors. The reality is,among these 15 songs the album is based more in "diva clishes" as I'd call them here than with music written with a group in mind. A lot of digitized two-step dance rhythms that everyone (even today) are still using, deadly dull lyrics about getting over being "done wrong" by a man. Hey I'm not saying there's not a place for that-just saying it the way it is. Of course the interesting part of this album is the fact that there are a handful of songs that point in some excellent musical directions. "Ooh Boy" and "Million Different Ways" with their hard grooving disco-funk flavor are right out of the En Vogue school we've all come to love and look for. "Losin' My Mind","I Do Love You "Piece Of My Love" and "Ooh La La" all actually make more of an effort to hybrid the flavors of funk with modern techniques with a sense of quirkiness that would have served the group better had it been extended across the album. The aware and hopeful "New Day Callin'" is a great song which does the same thing and actually points to some more potent lyrics as well. You could say that this was En Vogue trying to "adapt to the modern era" of music-see there's another clishe. In reality however they didn't need to: they'd already been part of the movement that got the ball rolling for what came after and needed to think more as leaders, taking the hip-hop girl group sound to the next level rather than looking to keep up with the joneses.
