great ensemble, great noir
I love Barbara Stanwyck, I'll watch anything she did that I can find. Same for Burt Lancaster, and I've seen almost everything he did, though some things still aren't available online.
There's a serious question in this film, as to whether Henry was a milquetoast who finally turned on his wife, or whether his yielding to her at every step was evidence of real love for her.
There's also a timing problem. Her doctor reveals the truth about her condition only months before the final events, but I believe it's stated in the script that Henry started his independent activities a year before that. (guess I'll have to watch it again to remind myself. Yeah, throw me into THAT briar patch.) Watch Lancaster's hands twisting the phone cord. Is he angry over the lies, or is he angry because they could have had a fuller life together if he had known the truth and confronted her with it? What you think depends on whether you think he really loved her.
Likewise in the last scene, does Lancaster look terrified because now he'll never have the chance to set things straight with Leona -- and is that because he set the final scene in motion or because those are cops hanging around and they've already told him he's under arrest?
I guess it's the beauty of noir that a film can raise all these questions and never answer them, leaving the audience to speculate for themselves.
This was Lancaster's 7th film in three years, and Stanwyck was a 25 year veteran of stage and screen. When you finish this, watch All My Sons and see Lancaster stand his ground with another old trouper, Edward G. Robinson.
That shot with Lancaster in a turtleneck jumper made me want to scream. I'm an avid knitter (see my moniker) and if I ever saw a still of Lancaster in an Irish Aran jumper (I have made one for myself and wore it out) I would probably melt into a steaming puddle. Especially if he had a blue shirt under it and the still was in color, bringing out those cobalt blue eyes.

Excellent Stanwyck, Lancaster, & supporting cast!
This is both, one of my favorites of, Barb and Burt, and the movie has a great storyline, allowing the tragic nature of both personas, to crash together like cymbals! I'm not sure who ended up most tragic, although Barb's tragic end was by way of Burt's big plans, she still put herself "in the noose" so to speak, by way of her entire life of avarice and self centeredness... Great, Great film; you'll be torn by it all too, I assure you–to pieces–utterly, and completely, threadbare–and the drastic, pitiful ending, will leave your heart feeling like a potted plant in a haunted house... See This ...You Must! It's riveting, shocking, dire, even ugly, but, it is oh so fantastic a human tale, ENJOY, !😱!
