Arrangers: Hector Zazou ; Jane Siberry. Hector Zazou's career has come a long way since his noteworthy recordings for Belgian avant-garde label Made To Measure. He has always had an affinity for blending world-music mores with cutting-edge electronics, which, combined with an aptitude for experimentalism, is beautifully demonstrated on SONGS FROM THE COLD SEAS. Zazou uses talents such as Bjork, Suzanne Vega, John Cale, Jane Siberry, and Siouxsie, dribbling their seductive vocal phrasings over songs of shimmering, dusky electronics and worldbeat rhythms like sweet raspberry sauce over a chocolate sorbet. It's a tasty concoction: the techno-folk stylings of "The Lighthouse," the chunky Japan-like global funk of "Adventures in the Scandinavian Skin Trade," the crisp jazzy ambience of "The Long Voyage." And through it all, Zazou and his compatriots suggest journeys into desolate climates and exotic locales, rippled with fits of longing, melancholia, and delight. SONGS FROM THE COLD SEAS is opulent stuff.
