In a strictly emotional review I absolutely loved this album by Mr.
Capaldi. I had never heard of him before, until I heard "Some Come Running" on the radio, back in "88"-"89", and went out immediately and bought the tape. The whole group of songs got me through some of the toughest, yet most self identifying moments of my life. I played the tape so much I wore it out over the years.
Mr. Capaldi, we have lost a VERY talented artist and though you are not with us on this earth, I wish to thank you for giving me strength
through your music and a better understanding of who I was then and in who I have become today.

Ab 1972 veröffentlichte er das eine oder andere ziemlich erfolglose Soloalbum und diverse Singles, von denen einige ("It's All Up to You", "It's All Right", "Love Hurts", "Shoeshine", "That's Love", "Living on the Edge") mittlere bis untere Plätze in verschiedenen Charts erreichten.
"Love Used to Be a Friend of Mine", "Voices in the Night", "Take Me Home" (recht Bruce Springsteen-esque) und das von George Harrison und Eric Clapton veredelte "Oh Lord, Why Lord" waren weitere starke Nummern.
Januar 2005 an Magenkrebs.

Traffic drummer Jim Capaldi just about reaches the nadir of adult contemporary pop on this late 1980s effort. His Mark Hollis-style vocals fused with generic Richard Marx arrangements makes Richard Marx seem like Nick Drake.

Capaldi turned into Phil Collins. Sad. He was such a nice boy in his Traffic days. He used to cut the grass ehm, play the drums then.

I really wish that I could give this a higher rating. Jim Capaldi has perhaps the most underrated voice in rock history. His tenor - I think that's what it is - has some roughage to it, and when he gets to sink his teeth into something with a bit of meat on its bones he can bring out a song's emotional meaning as well as most singers. Examples of that can be found here on the ballad "Love Used To Be a Friend of Mine", the slow burner "Something So Strong" (which has a punchy chorus) and a cover of "Oh Lord, Why Lord". That particular song, truthfully, has no business working as well as it does. It was written about racial prejudice ("The color of my skin is said to be an awful sin", goes one of the lines), so Capaldi, being white, is up against it trying to make the audience suspend disbelief. To a large extent, however, he succeeds.
Unfortunately, the main characteristic of this record is its 80s production touches. The synthesizers range from blaring to airy. There are drum machines in several places, which sucks enough on its own but is particularly irritating on an album by a drummer, especially a drummer from a band whose sound was as organic as Traffic's was. It also doesn't help when said production touches are used in the service of a song as bad as "Dancing on the Highway", whose toothless lyrics are about teenage rebellion. Also, "Take Me Home" (the peppiest thing here) sounds like it could have been on the _Miami Vice_ soundtrack. It used to be one of my favorites from this record, but I can recognize its slight cheesiness now (although I still kinda sorta enjoy it when I'm in the right mood).
There are a handful of celebrity cameos on this. The most notable are George Harrison, who contributes his trademark slide guitar to "Oh Lord Why Lord", and Steve Winwood, whose keyboard and background vocals decorate the title track. I wonder now what he could have done with that ballad if he had recorded it on one of his own albums, which had far less generic production. Less memorable contributions are made by Eric Clapton and Bad Company guitarist Mick Ralphs. In fact, I don't know what songs they play on because the liner notes don't tell me.
I can't recommend this to anyone but Traffic die-hards and fans of 80s AOR. Everyone else is directed to _Short Cut Draw Blood_ for a better example of Capldi's fine voice singing good material. Better yet, just start with "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" and "Rock and Roll Stew", both of which can be found on _The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys_.
