This pressing contains two mastering errors: 2-2 plays “Tropic of Capricorn (Alternate Version from Solo 1974-1979)” (4:46) rather than “Epsilon in Malaysian Pale (Alternate Version from Solo 1974-1979)” (4:00), and 3-8 plays “IF 810 (Alternate Version from Solo 1974-1979)” (3:04) rather than the Solo 1974-1979 version of “Tropic of Capricorn” (4;46). Subsequent pressings correct the content to match the packaging, but in doing so, lose “IF 810”, making this the only pressing that contains it.

- Edited 6 months agoThe gold standard go to for fans of pioneering synthesist cum e-guitarist Edgar Froese. One can hear how influential he was on the sound design(yes to some extent C Franke was as well) and compositions of Tangerine Dream. His 1 & 2nd release esp Epsilon in Malaysian Pale are beat-less no drums no guitar excursions into the ambient realms unlike Eno his approach was full on synth gear no loops. Epsilon is pure mellow beautification in audio form and a foretelling as to what the 80's new age musicians (some) received inspiration. Pinnacles is another gem filled to the brim with early pioneering PPG digital and analog synths again moving forward ignoring "trendy" disco influences of its time. All in all what you get for the money is more than a treat for the mind and ears. The music sounds remastered and superior to the original cds!
- This box-set is a bit of an oddity due to five albums (one a double) plus some bonus edits being squeezed down onto 4 discs. Nowadays with ripping and streaming it's not a big deal to 'reform' the albums (as 3 are split across discs). As for sound quality I give them the thumbs up. None of the albums were ever audiophile fodder and nothing here stands out as meddled with or dynamically compressed. The material is faithful to the original vinyl (I had them all on original UK pressings so should know) and is the best of all Edgar's solo work. 'Ages' seems to come in for some critical stick but I find it relaxingly 'familiar' rather than repetitive. Super value too as I got my set brand new at well under £3 per album. Buy this and get the Edgar W. Froese 'Macula Transfer' on Eastgate and it's job done.
- Its funny-I had the LP version of Pinnacles and I always thought the track entitled Pinnacles was impressive. The one track that stood out as not being representational of the initial LP version was the last one on this 4 CD set-the 21 minute version of Pinnacles-the amazing solo sequence that runs through part of the LP version sounds like a watered down edit on the 4 CD set. I found that disappointing. I didn't pay a lot for my copy of 1974-1983 but nonetheless...The rest of it sounds like the original LP versions so its a good listen otherwise.
