"Punky Brewster" star Soleil Moon Frye is revisiting some of her darkest memories and her new documentary, "Kid 90,” reveals that she was raped as a teen.
Frye pieced the memories back together with the information she gathered from journals, videotapes, and audio cassette tapes. In an entry in her diary, a 17-year-old Frye recounted how a man raped her when she was a virgin. "He asked if I’d say that he had raped me, but I wouldn’t. I was also to blame for my forwardness," the excerpt cited by The Los Angeles Times reads.
In an audio recording, she is heard confronting a male friend about a night when she blacked out after only drinking ginger ale. "Even now, I’m still trying to put the pieces together of experiences that I didn’t really completely understand," she said. "Only now do I know what [date rape drug] GHB is. I’d just pushed that all down, and I don’t think I ever thought I would really share or confront it. But I wanted to find forgiveness — both for the people involved and for the little girl who felt in some way responsible for any shame or pain."
Neither of the men have been identified.
In the documentary, Frye also reveals that Charlie Sheen was her first consensual sexual experience.
"He was my first, who would have known?" she wrote in a journal entry, per TooFab. "It's been the most strange and incredible day ever. I don't truly know how to explain my feelings, he's somebody I've had a crush on for years. He's someone who intrigues me and excites me."
Speaking about revisiting her past experiences for the documentary, Frye told Variety it was a healing process.
"I can only speak to my truth and my story, which is that it was about forgiving the little girl in me that felt shame or like I couldn’t share, or felt like I had to bury all of this away — not about the whos or whats," she said.
"It was a really painful process and yet the most cathartic, beautiful experience of my life," she added.
