Sofiane Diop in Philippe Clement’s plans at Monaco

Speaking to Nice-Matin, AS Monaco manager Philippe Clement confirmed that Sofiane Diop (22) remains in his plans, despite the player seeing his game time reduced in the second half of last season.

Questioned on whether Diop is still in his plans, especially given the arrivals of Breel Embolo (25) and Takumi Minamino (27), Clement said, “Last season we were playing just one match a week, now we’re going to be playing every three days an that will be different.”

Asked if that meant that the French youth international would get his chance, Clement replied, “Certainly. Like all the other players, he needs to prove every day that he should start. It’s Monaco: a top club where there is a lot of competition. He was unlucky to have returned from the holidays with an injury. I hope he’ll come back strong, make up for lost time and fight for his place. The more competition we have during the week, the better we will be in the matches.”

He continued, “He can have a future here. Everyone is coming to a conclusion from just 10 matches last season. We’re not talking about the twenty before that. Sofiane played all of them. We have created a false perception around his situation.”

Leicester have been linked with a move for the French U21 international.
