Not an extremely solid listening experience, but I can't give less than four to a compilation that includes "Carnt Sleep", "Avenue", "You're in a Bad Way" (still their most obvious 'pop classic'), "Who Do You Think You Are", "Hug My Soul", "He's on the Phone", "Burnt Out Car", "Woodcabin", "Sylvie", "Lose That Girl", "The Bad Photographer", "Goodnight Jack" and "Jack Lemmon." Well, I could, if the compilation also included a lot of crap; and though Smash the System does contain a couple of relatively crappy numbers as well, still that doesn't ruin the whole. "52 Pilot" was interesting to hear: I swear that from the very first second on I was certain that Sean O'Hagan has had something to do with it.

Saint Etienne are one of those bands that's capable of making truly great tracks...but only rarely. So surrounding the perfect pieces of pop that are "People Get Real," "Mario's Cafe," "You're in a Bad Way," and "Pale Movie" are tracks that come depressingly close to being Great ("Spring," "Jack Lemmon"), decent songs ("Kiss And Make Up") and some horrible tunes (a good portion of disc 2).
I guess my 4.5 rating testifies either to my own flawed rating system or the greatness of the, um, great tracks here. Either way, it's a fascinating listening experience, if only because it's so sonically consistent and so aesthetically inconsistent.

What can i say? Despite of their British background Saint Etienne's way of mixing French orientated music mixed with other music styles such as Dance music makes this "Smash The System: Singles And More" a high quality compilation worth checking out! Guaranteed! A happy realization full of energetic, excellent tracks.

Based on albums like Foxbase Alpha, Tiger Bay, and the close-to-masterpiece So Tough, the first disc include many of the finest moments in pop music of the early 90s, but large parts of the second disc is a little too pale and too disco for my liking. Still, for the occasionally listener this is surely a decent compilation.

Cheerful English pop at its best!
"Kiss and Make up" never released on an album is here. As is the last vinyl single I ever bought "Your're in a Bad Way" from the album So Tough .
