Sleeping in the Ground: An Inspector Banks Novel (Inspector Banks Novels Book 24) Kindle Edition
MICHAEL CONNELLY calls Peter Robinson "an author with amazing empathy, a snare-trap ear for dialogue, and a clear eye for the telling detail."
See why in Sleeping in the Ground, the gripping new novel starring Alan Banks — featuring an opening scene you'll never forget, and a finale you won't see coming.
At the doors of a charming country church, an unspeakable act destroys a wedding party. A huge manhunt ensues. The culprit is captured. The story is over.
Except it isn't. For Alan Banks, still struggling with a tragic loss of his own, there's something wrong about this case — something unresolved. Reteaming with profiler Jenny Fuller, the relentless detective deeper into the crime... deep enough to unearth long-buried secrets that reshape everything Banks thought he knew about the events outside that chapel.
And when at last the shocking truth becomes clear, it's almost too late.
Packed with twists and turns, heart and soul, this is another triumph from an author "at the top of his game" (LOUISE PENNY).

As often occurs in British police procedurals, there is an "oh my" moment for American readers. In this one it's the fact that the medical teams were not allowed to tend to the dead and wounded until the Armed Response team was sure the sniper had gone, a wait of almost two hours including the time to get to the site.
I only have two criticisms. The first is minor and only annoys me because I'm such a stickler for details and have reread the books in the series a number of times. Robinson has really extended time in this novel. At one point, Banks states that he first came to Eastvale thirty years ago, that his first case in Swainshead was 25 years ago, and that Jennie has returned after being away for 20 years ago. That can't be right since it would make Banks a bit over sixty and his two children in their late 30's. I recall reading an interview with Robinson in which he said that he wasn't very concerned with remembering details from one novel to another in the series. That's fine, but it still can be annoying for persnickety readers who almost view Banks and the other characters as well-known and believable friends, and remember the details.
The second criticism I have is with Banks himself. He has become an increasingly boring, almost maudlin character. His pretentiousness regarding the music he listens to and the liquor he drinks is getting old. His experiences with women is also off -putting. (Thank heavens that young Gerry and the delightful Winsome have never developed a crush on him.) Banks still thinks about his ex-wife and can't understand why she left him (many readers could explain that to him!). He's had a few too many affairs, including with women who were really too young for him. With Jenny returning, he wants to rekindle the spark between them and even asks her if it is possible. Why doesn't he just ask her out for dinner or a concert and see what develops. I'd like to see the Banks of old, the gritty , tough but compassionate cop. Despite these quibbles, Sleeping in the Ground is still a pleasurable read.
The crime story itself starts off with a bang, but the investigation soon bogs down in relentless detail about a gun club, tracing clothing purchases and so on. (Although it is always interesting to encounter the British attitude about guns and policing. Guns are treated as inherently dangerous, something the American gun lobby refuses to admit.) A good editor could have lopped off 100 pages and it would be a better book.
Sleeping in the Ground begins with murders by an unknown sniper at a village wedding. By the end of the book, the reader will know what happened and why. However, for me, the mystery in this one felt less important than what was happening with Alan Banks.
Alan has learned that his first sweetheart has died. This leads him to reminisce about his youth and to contemplate how we all change as we grow older. There is an elegaic tone to this contemplation. I have always wanted Banks to be ageless and for the series to continue for ever but this one has led me to think that this may not be the case. I will not worry too much yet though as another in the series is to be published soon. This is a series that is over 20 books strong. If you read one, you may just need to read them all.
