SKIN OF MY TEETH Lyrics
Demi leaves rehab again
When is this shit gonna end?
Sounds like the voice in my head
I can't believe I'm not dead
[Chorus]
I'm alive by the skin of my teeth
I survived, but it got harder to breathe
Askin' why doesn't make it easier
Go easier on me
Goddamn it, I just wanna be free
But I can't 'cause it's a fuckin' disease
I'm alive by the skin of my—
[Post-Chorus]
Woo-hoo, ooh
Woo-hoo, ooh
[Verse 2]
The reaper knocks on my door
'Cause I'm addicted to more
I don't need you to keep score
When I'm the one who's at war
[Chorus]
I'm alive by the skin of my teeth
I survived, but it got harder to breathe
Askin' why doesn't make it easier
Go easier on me
Goddamn it, I just wanna be free
But I can't 'cause it's a fuckin' disease
I'm alive by the skin of my—
I'm just tryin' to keep my head above water
I'm your son and I'm your daughter
I'm your mother, I'm your father
I'm just a product of the problem
I'm just tryin' to keep my head above water
I'm your son and I'm your daughter
I'm your mother, I'm your father
I'm alive
[Chorus]
I'm alive by the skin of my teeth
Won't you try and have some mercy on me?
Askin' why doesn't make it easier
Go easier on me
Goddamn it, I just wanna be free
But I can't 'cause it's a fuckin' disease
I'm alive by the skin of my—
[Post-Chorus]
Woo-hoo, ooh (Hey, yeah)
Woo-hoo, ooh (I'm alive by)
Woo-hoo, ooh (The skin of my teeth)
About
“SKIN OF MY TEETH” is the Pop-Punk lead single from the American singer Demi Lovato’s eighth studio album, HOLY FVCK, and released on June 10, 2022.
The song was first teased by Lovato beginning in January of 2022 with a series of clips posted on their Instagram stories.
Later in May of 2022, the singer revealed the track as the lead single for the new album, alongside new snippets teased of the first verse and bridge. A teaser for the song was released in the album’s trailer.
The track portrays Lovato’s experience recovering from an overdose; a scary scene of barely surviving, and the pressure of media as a celebrity battling a drug addiction. The song was a very important message for Lovato to develop during the process of making their eighth studio album.
When I got into the groove of the album process – it was so cathartic for me, especially because I had just gotten out of treatment again and I wanted to make a statement of like, “I see you and this is what I’m going through and you’re not gonna make me feel bad about it.”

Lovato wishes to help people further understand what it’s like going through this grueling process, and that everyone is still a living, breathing human being.
You know, it’s something that I wanted to humanize addiction for people who don’t understand it, and that’s part of the reason why I go so detailed in the bridge.

The writing process for me was really easy, the lyrics just flowed out of me and my co-writers Lil Aaron and Laura Veltz. we all had an incredible time working on this song and we’re so excited to make an anthem for people that struggle with addiction
I wanted to make an anthem for people in recovery from addiction. I wanted to humanize the disease for people who’ve never experienced it and don’t understand it. That’s partly why I get so detailed about it in the bridge, which is my favorite part of the song: [I sing] ‘I am just trying to keep my head above water/I am your son, and I am your daughter/I’m your mother, I’m your father.’ It is making a statement about how I am just like everyone who suffers from addiction. We’re all the same. It was so cathartic for me because I had just come out of treatment again. I wanted to make a statement of saying, ‘I see what you’re saying, this is what I’m going through, and you’re not going to make me feel bad about it.’

During an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Demi stated:
Yes, [this song] is [rock and roll]. It’s definitely a change of pace for me. But I’m also going back to my roots, because that’s what I started singing when I released my first album, [Don’t Forget], and my second album, [Here We Go Again].
