Ronnie Hawkins may fool around, but he doesn't fool around, if you know what I mean. The great one from the north may be best known for helping The Band cut their teeth on the northern road, but he didn't stop there. Hank Williams has been done by many artists, but few (to my mind) have done it so naturally and honestly as Ronnie Hawkins does in this collection. Solid and sincere interpretations typify this group of Hank's hits. Songs like Cold, Cold Heart and Hey, Good Lookin' are just as solid as can be and I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry is definitely different.
Good, steady musicians do everything justice and while the background harmonies seem to border on muzak at times, it's country music, pure and simple. "The Hawk," is flying high and easy here.
