Reviews
- Edited 2 years agoRosemary Clooney is a brilliant singer, and ruled the '50s. Her later voice (70s-80s), however, was mature and much more expressive, IMO.
These records on Concord Jazz represent a fine collection of standards and contemporary pop hits, interpreted by a master. She does her best work with somber love songs, infusing a flat melancholy to her line delivery. It is magical.
Serving up a heapin' helping of guitar, is Canada's own dynamo Ed Bickert. Bickert's mellow comping sets the right mood for this record, and his solos are tasty, but not overly flashy as you might find on her records with chops meister Cal Collins. Ed's approach is very inside and perhaps Louis Armstrong-esque.
The ensemble here really swings when they need to. The recording and production are excellent. Pressing is great although my copy has a pretty bad saddle warp.
Recommended.
