Lesley Gore, the voice of the 1960’s hit “It’s My Party” was born on this day in 1946
Lesley Gore was born Lesley Sue Goldstein in New York on May 2, 1946, and became successful during the early 1960’s with her smashing No.1 Pop hit “It’s My Party”, which she recorded with Quincy Jones in 1963. Gore was also an actress and starred with small roles on several TV shows during the 1960’s including “Batman”. Aside of “It’s My Party”, Gore’s other hits include “Judy’s Turn to Cry”, “She’s a Fool”, “You Don’t Own Me”, “Maybe I Know” and “California Nights”. In 1980 she composed songs for the soundtrack of the 1980 film “Fame”, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for “Out Here on My Own”. Later in her life, Gore, came out as lesbian, and, beginning in 2004, she hosted the PBS television series “In the Life”, which focused on LGBT issues. Lesley Gore died of lung cancer in Manhattan, New York City, aged 68. At the time of her death, Gore and her partner Lois Sasson had been together for 33 years.
