By any criteria, Sinatra's simple the best. And when it comes to the American songbook, no one surpasses him. One of the songs on this album is priceless. It remains on my top ten list and is unusual in its presentation. Hoagy Carmichael and MItchell Parish's "Stardust". But wait, in a spectacular arrangement by Don Costa , you will hear only the verse not the chorus. The arrangement is over the moon and while the album of standards is superb, "Stardust" will linger in your mind in a dreamy melancholy way. Check it out!

Sinatra at his best, vocal and interpretive powers are epic, arrangements are sublime.

Although I treasure many of the Chairman's Reprise era recordings, "SINATRA AND STRINGS" is I believe the supreme masterpiece, the one post Capitol LP that ranks with such landmarks as "ONLY THE LONELY".
Recorded in November of 1961, "S&S" was the first and easily best work that arranger Don Costa ever did for Sinatra ( most of his later arrangements were of inferior material ). Excepting an overly "Hollywoodish" finale to Cole Porter's "Night and Day", Costa's arrangements are perfectly prepared canvasses for Sinatra's luminous and caressingly erotic singing, quasi-operatic yet intimate in approach. In a way, "S&S" is a kind of update of Sinatra's early Columbia sides with Axel Storhahl, his gains in maturity and wisdom ( in life as much as music ) fusing with Columbia style romantic longing. In this way, "S&S" is quite a contrast with both the desperation driven saloon singing of his earlier Capitol era landmarks and the full-blown "theatrical" performances of "THE CONCERT SINATRA" ( 1963 ).
This album contains one immaculate performance after the other but if I had to choose just one "stopper" to demonstrate its brilliance it would be the classic rendition of the Mercer/Arlen standard "Come Rain or Come Shine". This performance starts out as a string heavy ballad and ends as a slow tempo fingersnapper with the bluesy accompaniment of Harry "Sweet" Edison's muted trumpet. Incredible.
Finally, the recording quality of "S&S" is perhaps the finest of all his Reprise recordings, the 20-BIT remastered recording providing excellent sound ( most of the Reprise era recordings have been well served by the 20 BIT process ). Potential buyers should note that the earlier CD release contained two extra songs (outtakes from the same sessions ), both of which are interesting but not quite on the level of the others.

I bought this CD specifically because it has Frank's famous version of Stardust - the one in which he sings the verse only. Much admired but also very controversial when it came out in 1962 as a 7 inch single. I still have the single but it is getting a bit scratchy and is not very convenient to play - so I bought the CD. I do love what Frank and Costa did with Stardust. It is a landmark recording. The flip side on the 7 inch single was Kern's Yesterdays - which, is also on the album. After Stardust it is probably the best track, although Sinatra inserts some irritating pauses in the lyrics. I do remember deciding not to buy the full album at the time it came out, because I had heard other tracks from it and I wasn't too impressed. Having heard it again after 45 years or so, I feel that my original reservations were correct. Most of the arrangements are too bombastic and Frank takes several of the songs far too slowly. He made better recordings of some of them in earlier years. The producers at Reprise were right in their original selection of the two tracks that made it to the single. They are by far the best thing on the album, and Stardust alone makes it worth the price of admission.

I have listened to this disc several times and wondered why it did not click with me as have most other Sinatra presentations.
Firstly I think the others were presentations with Frank speaking in between songs introducing them, giving more of a live feeling.
Listening again tonight I think the over riding comment of the recording was that it was too melancholic rather than romantic which I associate strings to.
Nothing wrong with the voice except in some cases somewhat slow and overall I felt a dampening of mood.
Maybe that was the intent by the producers but I prefer Frank to be more 'hip'.

This CD re-mastering of Sinatra and Strings is much welcomed. This is one of Frank's best albums ever, and while the CD is not up to the sonic quality of the original vinyl LP, it has bettered the original CD that has been around for years on many important points. There is more resolution and a better sound stage than the original CD and Frank's voice sounds more palpable in this enhanced CD version.
As for the album itself, this is one of Frank's albums to which you never tire listening. Every track is a gem and demonstrates the Master's interpretative skill and inimitable voice control.
All in all, HIGHLY recommended, especially since the LP is getting harder to find.

I first heard "Come Rain or Come Shine" on a list of Jazz hits. Of course, Amazon had the album, and I bought it.
All of the hits he sang were beautiful, and done to a turn!

How can one singer create so many excellent albums? Sinatra is truly the singer of the 20th century, perhaps the greatest singer of all time. This is not to detract from the achievements of Pavarotti or Caruso, Elvis Presley or the Beatles, Crosby or Bennett, Aretha or Barbra or Billie or Ella Fitzgerald. Although, I must say that most of the current crop of singers could take lessons from the Voice. You may not like his sometimes arrogant personality (but you can tip your hat to his many gifts to thousands of charities), but there is no denying the greatness of that golden voice.

One of the greatest ballad albums ever produced
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 20, 2016
This is one of Sinatra's best most profound honest and most tender heartbreaking ballad albums that he ever produced. His voice is in perfect condition and displays all the unique facets and qualities that are the Sinatra staple with all the unsurpassed unrivalled Majesty that Sinatra has with a lyric and song. The songs are a superior variety of well known songs and lesser known ballads made all the more rich and great by Sinatra's renditions. Frank's phrasing and pronunciation of a lyric in this album is so supreme and no one can match the sensitivity and immense feeling and heartfelt emotion that he puts I to these songs I cannot recommend this album enough it is just exceptional and a truely masterful album that stands proud and tall in the great Sinatra pantheon and iconic legend.

What a glorious sound!

Twelve beautiful ballads sung by the master without any of his vocal gimmicks that today date the recordings and make them sometimes rather silly. Here they are in a straightforward manner, and recorded better than any other CDs of Sinatra's that I have, quite a few. They sound as if they were recorded tomorrow, so fresh and new.
A must have for his fans and for those, like myself, that were beginning to wonder when his reputation would fade away. Judging by this record, not for a very long, long time.

Just magic !!

I have virtually everything Sinatra recorded on Vinyl including this album which I have not played for many years. I therefore bought the CD and there is little I can add to what everybody else has written on these reviews.
We will never see the like of this artist again. His phrasing, intonation, diction and musicality is par excellence. I still get goose pimples when I hear his torch songs and, as a Jazz musician myself, revel in his up tempo numbers. Sheer Class !! RIP the Master.

Matchless, flawless. I'm almost speechless!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 20, 2017
One reviewer has said this is Sinatra's finest recorded achievement. Well, it's flawless beauty is up there with his best, as was evident on the 1970s four album box set The Reprise Years where I think four recordings from this one album were included. Its nearest competitor in that collection's listing was "Sinatra's Sinatra". Sinatra at a peak - or should one say, another peak? You like music? You'll love Sinatra and Strings.

I had the vinyl 12" which disappeared somewhere in a move, then saw it in the States and didn't buy it - bad move as couldn't get it in the UK.. Then lovely Amazon had it. What can I say - Sinatra at his very best with lush strings backing and some fabulous songs recorded in his own inimitable style. He makes it sound so easy. My fave has to be Stardust. WOW! But all fab songs and a fab album - yes you guessed it, I'm a fan
