Product Description

The controversial true story that inflamed a nation! Meryl Streep (Still of the Night) stars in this stunning, provocative and daring drama about one woman s struggle against a huge corporation. Karen Silkwood (Streep) lives a free-spirited existence with two friends, Drew Stephens (Kurt Russell, Death Proof) and Dolly Pelliker (Cher, Moonstruck), who work with her at an Oklahoma nuclear facility. It's only when she discovers she's been exposed to radiation that Karen's conscience awakens, and soon she is digging for evidence of wrongdoing at her company. But her sudden zeal for safer working conditions may come at a high price as she alienates friends and possibly even puts her own life in peril. Excellent direction by Mike Nichols (The Graduate) with a screenplay by Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle) and Alice Arlen (Alamo Bay) and a stellar supporting cast that includes Craig T. Nelson (Poltergeist), Diana Scarwid (Mommie Dearest), Fred Ward (Tremors), Ron Silver (Blue Steel), Charles Hallahan (The Thing), Josef Sommer (Witness), David Strathairn (Limbo), M. Emmet Walsh (Blood Simple), Tess Harper (Tender Mercies) and Will Patton (No Way Out). Nominated for 5 Academy Awards: Actress (Streep), Supporting Actress (Cher), Director (Nichols), Original Screenplay (Ephron, Arlen) and Editing (Sam O Steen).

The movie looks like a vhs tape movie in a blu-ray package. Not the clear, vibrant quality you expect in a blu-ray disk movie. Disappointed

This cost a bit more than I usually pay for a movie, but I remembered it from a long time ago. Based on a true story, which makes it all the more creepy!

I’ve been looking for a copy of Silkwood for a couple of months. This is a great movie and one of my favorites.

I bought this as a gift for someone who lives in Region 1. While it appears to be clearly marked as Region 2 now, it wasn't at the time I bought it and the recipient wasn't able to play it for a while. She finally bought a multi-region player and got to watch it and I'm told it played fine with the new player. I was very unhappy at the time of my purchase, but it appears it does now show the correct Region so it shouldn't be a problem for others.

Bought this DVD via Amazon.com as I could not find it using any of the platforms on my Smart TV. It arrived in just one day. I popped it my Sony Blu-ray DVD player and watched the entire movie. Having seen it before in 1983 while it was making its way thru the Cinemas after its release, this viewing made my second time. I enjoyed it just as much as the first time if not more. Merryl Streep, Cher, and Kirk Russell were amazing in their performances. The story gave the viewer a sense of what it might be like to work with plutonium in a nuclear power plant, and the associated risks inherent in that occupation. This story focuses on the private and professional life of Karen Silkwood (1946 - 1974) portrayed by Merryl Streep, who became a whistle-blower to expose the illegal and dangerous practices of one Oklahoma nuclear plant where she worked as a technician. The story had a tragic and sad ending.

Silkwood is so important to watch and know about. Especially today, workers should be empowered to do something about their work environments when they suspect they're working under dangerous conditions. Many corporations make billions of dollars off the backs of everyday folks who work hard just to live and pay their bills. Those corporation's CEOs can well afford to put safeguards in place to protect their dedicated, talented, skilled and loyal workers!

What makes this movie so different and so superior to similar movies such as The China Syndrome and Norma Rae is the balance and intelligence of Nora Ephron's screenplay.

Ephron and director Mike Nichols treat Karen Silkwood and her working-class buddies with great compassion along with a healthy dose of skepticism. Silkwood, as played by Streep, is not a perfect person. She sees herself as a working-class hero even though Ephron and Nichols clearly do not. The moviemakers point out that before she can fight a crusade on behalf of America's oppressed masses, she needs to get better about getting to work on time and following standard company procedures.

Ephron and Nichols do, however, make a very frightening case against the level of power and control with which these large American corporations invade and penetrate our private lives. Some of the movie's most affecting scenes are the decontamination scenes in which employees are stripped and showered down. What makes them so lasting is that they seem like rape scenes. It's not the possible radiation that affects you, but the sense that these companies either do or can strip and shower so many of us on a literal and symbolic level.

The finest moment of the movie comes when Karen, driving home and dead tired, hits a deer. It's a strange but very affecting moment. I don't think it's symbolic exactly, but I think Ephron and Nichols use it as a loss of innocence for Karen. Mistakes happen; you can't save everybody. Maybe the situation at the power plant is like the deer in the road. Life is unfair and painful and it's not always anyone's fault. At least that's how I read the scene.

Finally, the DVD I bought from Amazon a few years ago has different cover art than the one now shown. It's an all-white cover with a picture of Streep, Cher, and Kurt Russell. The picture quality as viewed on a widescreen LCD TV (mine is 32 inches) is mediocre but acceptable. You get a small rectangle at the center of the screen that is surrounded by black borders. If any movie is in need of a Blu-ray remastering, Silkwood would be it.

My husband had never seen this movie and after watching a Chernobyl documentary I had to see it again. I remember after watching it when it first came out it has made me very aware of the plant that is just over 2 hours away with family living very near it.

Watching Erin Brocavitch prompted me to find this story and I am glad I found it. A good basic portrayal of blue collar workers facing up to the power of the company, along with internal conflicts around union participation and safety laws. Karyn's death was as ambiguous here as in reality. Definitely pleased I found it again.
