Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/01/23 Full Review Audience Member 10 years old and I remember liking this a lot Brie Larson, Rami Malek, and LaKeith Stanfield At a California care unit for at-risk teens Grace is a young counselor She helps a new hire get used to the kids' routine and daily lives Most of them are runaways or people with special needs A new member Jayden arrives and will only open up the way she knows how, Grace actually takes the time to sit down and listen to her but it isn’t her job to interpret tears Yet she's also remaining guarded confronting her own form of abuse she experienced, it makes her afraid of connections yet also fuels her drive to help the kids she sees over The staff members try to keep it together while the kids are begging for some worth to be recognized This is the point when Brie Larson finally starts to establish herself as an upcoming actress Director Destin Daniel-Cretton based much of this on his real-life experience working with a similar program I'm happy to say this resonated with me in so many ways Being an individual with a disability needing other people's help when things hurt so badly Hurt people hurt other hurt people but they can also help them, one can only bear the literal and metaphorical scars for so long without breaking down, and a safe environment can still be life-changing and that's all we really need, how can we hide our wounds without being embarrassed and put them in service of others? Brie Larson is absolutely amazing in this being somebody who can do the kind of work no one else can, she is the maternal refuge for young lost souls afraid to face their trauma Yet it gives us hope that we can be wounded healers Not only that but the film represents a paradigm shift in gender as well as diversity on screen Much of the cast in this would go on to bigger things thanks to Cretton The film works so well because it's emotional, dense, and really looks at a group of people that desperately need us to listen to them, it’s all about the triumph of the human spirit Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Well this movie kicked me in my feels like none other. This movie was made by the first hand experiences of Crattons time with teens living these lived, which just makes it sadder because this is just life for many people growing up. For Brie’s first time leading a cast, she shows leading lady prowess here. Her emotions and reactions are so genuine and relatable that you can’t help but root for her through questionable actions because you can justify it in your mind.
