SYMINGTON

Photos by Peter Bigwood Page last updated: 2021-08-24

Symington was built by the IBA for the Ayr ILR service which launched on 16th October 1981 as West Sound on 1035 kHz.

The aerial is an interesting design. Note that the mast is earthed and the radiators are three wires which run close to the mast and then out in a complex array...

[Ed.] The aerial arrangement is that of an MF Folded Umbrella. An electrically short mast (37.5m) operating on a wavelength of 290m, with parallel wire radiating elements and a capacity umbrella. This type of aerial is used at several ILR MF sites including Brundall, Nigg, Rayleigh and Tarbat Ness. Also the Radio Caroline antenna at Orfordness.
