Shawnee Mission West has been a great school for me to get out of my shell and offer me many great experiences. With providing teachers that care about my mental health and my peers. They have offered me classes that have helped me dive into the medical field with me ending up getting my CNA then getting more into research with biotech. They have helped me with my passion for engineering with offering many classes of intro to engineering, coding, robotics, and etc. It helped me be initiated into the National Honors Society which helped me be able to give back to my community the way it has continuously given back to me with tutoring lessons, learning more about the bible, helping planning fundraisers for a variety of different causes, and etc. It installed in me a sense of leadership with allowing me the position as a member of the Women in Leadership Council, BSU publicist, and Student Council Senior Representative. I'm grateful everyday for my overall experience at SMW High School.
As a sophomore at Shawnee Mission West, I've enjoyed my time learning here and making new friends simultaneously. Most of the teachers working here are eager to educate students and prepare them for their future. At West, multiple school organizations embrace student identity and clubs relating to student journalism. However, cleanliness is lacking as dust and grime are apparent in physical education rooms and hallways. A change I would like to see is an added emphasis and education on the harmful and deteriorating effects drugs have on students. I feel as though the school may not educate students enough about the dangers of drug use and how easy it is to die as a result potentially.
The staff at my school is genuinely amazing. They are very passionate and knowledgeable teachers who are eager to help. The worst part would have to be the building itself. Most of the bathrooms - at least the girls - didn’t have locking stalls. Leaking water is a huge issue at my school, the sinks and toilets leak in the bathroom causing the floors to be covered in water. water would also leak heavily from the ceiling, at point causing it to collapse in one room. i’d like to see a change in the maintenance because those problems could cause serious injuries to staff or student body.
